2011-06-10 Friday News June 10, 2011 June 10, 2011 Another Great Parks Celebration Saturday was a very active day for Mendota Heights Residents, with a record turnout at the Mendota Heights 5K, beautiful weather for the parks celebration, and good crowds at the MHAA invitational baseball tournament. The 5K, organized by Neil Garlock, made a net profit of just over $8,000 to benefit Special Olympics Minnesota—clearly an example of having fun for a very good cause. After two consecutive years of rainouts at the Parks Celebration, 300+ residents visited Mendakota Park to play games, listen to live music, do crafts and visit the petting zoo. Councilmember Ultan Duggan was a popular person at the parks celebration, with the return of Duggan’s Dashes. ARC Field Trip The Airport Relations Commission continued their yearly education on airport related issues by touring the FAA Air Traffic Control Center in Farmington this week. All of the ARC commissioners along with Councilmember Petschel toured the center and learned how the Farmington center plays a role in getting air traffic to and from the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport. This year’s educational trip comes after last year’s tour of the airport’s control tower which was very interesting. All of the ARC members appreciated the tour this week and it shows the continued positive relationship that has developed between Mendota Heights, the Metropolitan Airports Commission and the Federal Aviation Administration. Thank you to all of the ARC members for attending. Recreation Programs The last day of school for ISD 197 students happened this week and recreation staff are gearing up for the start of programming next week. Tennis, playground and golf programs are all set, and registration has been brisk. Teresa Gangelhoff, Katy Sanders, Joanna Gelderman and Tom Perkins are all key staff in providing a range of fun and safe programs for our youth. There are still some spaces available, check out registration on our web page for more information. The first draft of the 2012 budget is now being put together and will be reviewed by city staff members over the next month. The budget process does not stop or slow down even with the work of the legislature and governor not complete. There are still a number of unanswered questions at the state level that impact our 2012 budget but the process will move along with some assumptions being made. Levy limits will very likely be in place again for 2012. If you have questions on the budget or the 2012 budget process please contact the city administrator. Staff will receive updates on the budget process all year.
