2011-04-22 Friday News April 22, 2011 April 22, 2011 Twin Cities Occupational Health and Rehabilitation This week David McKnight was invited to tour Twin Cities Occupational Health and Rehabilitation in Mendota Heights. This is the organization that we use for employee physicals, workers compensation issues, drug testing and physical therapy. This local company does work with a wide variety of businesses throughout the metro area. The physical therapy area has actual work tools, equipment and setups from companies that also use TCOHR for their employees. The facility includes equipment from local oil refineries, trash haulers and other companies to help doctors determine physical capabilities of staff members. This was a very interesting tour of a local company that the city does business with. Although our visits as employees to this facility are not always positive, it is a great asset to Mendota Heights. Broadband Access Dakota Futures hosted a Broadband Summit on Thursday morning at the Burnsville Performing Arts Center. Jake Sedlacek attended this event, featuring Michael Langley of the Greater MSP economic development initiative. The summit also featured speaker panels representing internet access providers, local government and local business, school and medical leaders. Each panel discussed their experience to date in the area of broadband, as well as future service and demand. Staff has been keeping tabs on this issue on behalf of our residents, many of whom have little or no choice in internet providers. A county-wide effort is underway to encourage business (internet providers) to address our citizen’s service needs. 125th Anniversary On Tuesday of next week a number of city officials have been invited to Saint Thomas Academy to help them celebrate their 125th anniversary. Although it has a history of over a century, the school moved to Mendota Heights in 1965 and has been here ever since. Congratulations and thank you to Saint Thomas Academy on your 125th anniversary and for being a special part of our community. Your contributions to the city along with the future leaders that you create have made a significant mark on our city. We look forward to a continued positive relationship. The school officials updated us on the status of the school district with the financial issues they are currently dealing with. In addition we talked about a number of ways in which the school district along with the three cities that make up the district can work together. This informal update meeting was an excellent way to share what is happening in each organization. Additional meetings with representatives from the cities of Eagan and West St. Paul were also discussed. Thank you to Jay and Robin for taking the time to come and meet with us! High Performance Partnership City officials attended the wrap up meeting of the first phase of the High Performance Partnership meeting at Eagan City Hall on Friday. The recommendations for areas of potential joint projects include shared technical expertise, public safety facility, joint training programs, E-government programs, dark fiber and administrative courts. Committees have now been formed to look at each of the six areas to see if there are viable HiPP projects that could come out of each area. City staff will continue to be involved in this process. As you may be aware, the first time the HiPP process was used in the mid-2000’s it resulted in the creation of the Dakota Communications Center. Stay tuned to see what comes out of the HiPP process this time around.
