2011-04-08 Friday News April 8, 2011 April 8, 2011 Clean Up Day The City of Mendota Heights annual spring clean up is right around the corner, Saturday, May 7, 2011. The event will once again be held at Mendakota Park, materials will be accepted from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Volunteers are needed to help unload citizen’s vehicles, sorting scrap metal, rubbish, mattresses and electronics. Contact Jake if you are available. Citizens should bring their ID and some cash, as there will be fees based upon volume. More details on can be found on the website. American Bank is also hosting a community shred event, on the same day, from 9:00 to 12:00 p.m. at their location on Dakota Drive. Winter Wonderland Photo Contest The winners of the Winter Wonderland Photo Contest have now been selected. The winners include: Nature and Wildlife: Maria Humphreys and Valarie Namen People and Places: Tom Wittrock, Maureen Kucera-Walsh and Valerie Anderson City Scenes and Events: Maria Humphreys, Katie Schultz and Tom Wittrock The winners will receive gift cards that were donated from local businesses. The photos will be used on the city website, in future city newsletters and displayed at city hall. Thank you to all of the residents who participated and the businesses who donated prizes! ARC Orientation Three new members on the Airport Relations Commission received an “Airports 101” orientation session this week. All members of the ARC wanted to hear the orientation session so it was incorporated into the regular meeting this week. Former ARC Chair and current City Councilmember Liz Petschel provided a history of the airport, runways, terminology, how cities around the airport work together and some predictions on how technology will impact the future of airport noise in the area. The orientation led to an excellent exchange of information and ideas. The ARC will continue to perform their work on behalf of the residents of Mendota Heights. The ARC is looking forward to a tour of the air traffic control center located in Farmington to further their education. Staff has the clubhouse and course ready for another great season of golf. Make sure to play a few rounds at the Par 3 this year, you will not find a better value when it comes to greens fees. The course is great for beginners, families and anyone looking to practice their irons and putting. The work to improve the course over the past few years is really starting to show. City Staff Training This year the city’s management team is placing an emphasis being on providing in- house training opportunities for city staff. Lynn and Associates conducted training this week for city staff and council members on customer service, team building and related issues. The training focused on effective customer service skills, self engagement, the attitude you bring into your workplace and communicating effectively. Even in the very different jobs that each of us has the common basics of customer service and communication apply in all of the situations we get into as public employees.
