2011-04-01 Friday News April 1, 2011 April 1, 2011 Recreation Registration While the weather may not show it, Mendota Heights parents certainly know that spring is in the air. Registrations for summer recreation programs opened up late last week and staff have already received over 500 registrations. In the first week of registrations, the City has taken in $19,600 for all recreation programs. Nearly all of these registrations are taken via the internet, as more and more residents sign up online rather than in-person. While many popular programs filled right away, there are still spots available for some of the summer playground programs, golf camps, tennis and field trips. As expected, the field trip to watch the Twins play at Target Field filled almost immediately. Sorry, we have all the chaperone’s we need!! Russ Wahl Russ Wahl passed away last week at the age of 82. Russ served Mendota Heights and our surrounding communities in many capacities over the years. From council work to building inspections to work with the annual Halloween bonfire, Russ’s commitment to the community was clear. Russ is survived by his wife Marilyn, and their children, grandchildren and great- grandchildren. Thank you Russ for all that you have done for your family and the communities you have served throughout your lifetime. The legacy you leave behind will last forever and be enjoyed by your family and friends in many ways. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Wahl family during their time of grieving and loss. Safe Routes to Schools Jake Sedlacek attended a meeting at Friendly Hills Middle School with Principal Joni Hagebock and staff from Dakota County Public Health Department on Thursday to discuss opportunities and barriers to increasing the number of youth who walk or bike to school. The group reviewed a map of the area, discussing where kids are coming from and how they typical get to school today. Dakota County has hired a consultant that will conduct research in the school and review Dakota County and school district data. The end result will include recommendations for improvements to the school grounds, crosswalks and/or trail connections in the area. This is an important step in seeking grants for Safe Routes to Schools funding.
