Dakota County Fix It Clinic 12–3 p.m. Dec. 17 Harmon Park Neighborhood Center West St. Paul Get items fixed or mended for free and learn useful repair skills. NATURAL RESOURCES Practice Smart Salting this Winter Keeping paved surfaces safe for pedestrians and drivers is important; however, overuse of de-icing chemicals and salt is dangerous for the environment. When excess salt makes its way into storm drains, it is not treated to remove pollutants such as nutrients and sediment - instead, it flows directly into local lakes, streams and wetlands. Just one teaspoon of salt can permanently pollute five gallons of water! Once salt enters surface waters, it is very difficult to remove, and often is never removed. Chlorides and salts can also harm or kill pets and wildlife, especially if it is ingested. Homeowners and businesses can help by reducing salt use! Winter Reminders: Snow Removal With the arrival of snowy weather, Streets Maintenance crews are at work creating safe and passable City streets for motorists and pedestrians. Here's how you can help: When out for a walk or a run, wear bright colored clothing and give plow drivers a wave to be sure they see you. When taking out the trash, be sure to place the bins behind the curb line and try not to leave them out longer than necessary, so your street can be plowed curb-to-curb. When shoveling, be sure to clear snow and ice around storm drains and fire hydrants. Remember, parking is prohibited on City streets from 2-6 a.m. 1/17/23, 11:08 AM Dec. 2 Friday News https://content.govdelivery.com/accounts/MNMENDOTAHEIGHTS/bulletins/33a5714 6/6 City Business Hours City Hall: Monday-Thursday, 7 a.m.-4:30 p.m. | Friday 7-11:30 a.m. Police Department: Monday-Friday, 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Public Works Building: Monday-Friday, 7 a.m.-3:30 p.m. City Hall Contact Information Public Meetings Meetings take place at City Hall; changes or cancellations are noted at mendotaheightsmn.gov/calendar.
