Get ready for Frozen Fun this weekend!
Join us this weekend for our first ever Mendota Heights Frozen Fun Fest. Exciting free
events will be taking place to celebrate all that Mendota Heights Parks have to offer in the
winter! Preview the lineup at mendotaheightsmn.gov/frozen-fun-fest. Youth ice fishing
demos are filled to the gills. Space remains for teams to register for the family kickball
tournament.
Medallion Hunt Underway
The hunt started on Thursday and is vigorously underway. Clues are released daily at 8
a.m. on the City's website and Facebook channels. Please review the Medallion Hunt rules
prior to searching and be sure to immediately report if you find the medallion as a
courtesy to all participants.

Interested residents are encouraged to apply to fill seven seat openings
On February 2, 2022, the City Council approved an ordinance establishing a Natural
Resources Commission in the City of Mendota Heights. The Natural Resources
Commission is a seven-member commission appointed by the Mayor and City Council. The
Natural Resources Commission advises:
1. The City Council on matters pertaining to natural resources, sustainability,
environmental and climate stewardship, and opportunities for the advancement of
those areas including developing and recommending policies and initiatives that
enhance and preserve natural resources within Mendota Heights; and
2. If requested by the City Council, will prepare and assess plans, policies, goals and
ordinances for the acquisition, enhancement, or preservation of natural resources in
the City of Mendota Heights.
The City of Mendota Heights is seeking applicants interested in serving on the newly formed
Natural Resources Commission. The Natural Resources Commission will meet monthly, on
the second Wednesday of the month at 6 p.m. Meetings will take place at Mendota Heights
City Hall. All applicants must be residents of the City of Mendota Heights.
Interested persons should submit a letter of interest, Application Questionnaire and a
current resume, no later than 4:30 p.m. on February 25, 2022 to:

Welcome Commissioner O'Connor Mueller
On Wednesday, February 2, 2022 the City Council appointed a
new commissioner to serve on the Parks and Recreation
Commission. Michelle O’Connor Mueller will fill the seat left
vacant by the retirement of previous chair Steve Goldade. We
thank Steve for his service to the Mendota Heights community
and welcome Michelle to the Parks and Recreation
Commission.
Phase III At Home Apartments development moves
forward on 3-1 vote
At its meeting on Wednesday, February 2, the City Council considered a Conditional Use
Permit to amend Mendota Plaza Planned Unit Development for new Phase III / Lot 7, 79-
unit apartments by At Home Apartments, LLC.
The City Council was asked to consider a Conditional Use Permit (CUP) authorizing an
amendment to the Mendota Plaza PUD of 2009. At Home Apartments, LLC sought the
amendment in order to provide a new 79-unit apartment building on Lot 7 of the mall
development. During the meeting, At Home Apartments presented revised renderings and
information on the proposed apartment building and the City Council heard comments from
the public based on the revisions.
The proposal was approved on a 3-1 vote: voting in favor were Mayor Levine, Councilor
Paper, Councilor Mazzitello; voting against was Councilor Miller; Councilor Duggan was
absent.

Dakota County to host Community Conversation on
youth emergency housing
Dakota County is inviting the community to attend a community conversation on February
15 to hear more about their proposal to provide temporary emergency housing and services
for youth ages 12 to 17, who do not have a safe place to stay. Dakota County is interested
in purchasing the property located at 2031 Victoria Road South in Mendota Heights.
The Housing will provide temporary shelter and support services to youth that need a
temporary safe place to stay while families and professionals work toward reunification.
For more information on Dakota County’s proposal, please view their presentation to the
Mendota Heights City Council during the January 18 city council meeting.

COVID-19 information
Dakota County experiencing high COVID-19 transmission risk:
The Minnesota Department of Health and the Center for Disease Control are
recommending that both vaccinated and unvaccinated people in Dakota County wear
masks indoors. Dakota County is currently experiencing what the CDC defines as
high transmission risk of COVID 19. More information on the City’s COVID-19
guidance plan is available at mendotaheightsmn.gov/covid19.
Kids:
Minnesota families who get their child 5-11 years old fully vaccinated in January and
February can get a $200 Visa gift card. Parents/Guardians can register their 5- to 11-
year-old once they have completed their two-dose series. Learn more.
Children age 5-11 years old are eligible to get vaccinated. Minnesotans can use the
Find Vaccine Locations map to find providers offering Pfizer vaccine for 5-11 year
olds.

Walk-ins for Minnesotans are available at any state community vaccination sites.
Booster shots:
All Minnesotans age 12 and older are recommended to get a COVID-19 booster
shot. The timing of your booster shot depends on the vaccine you received for your

The Minnesota Department of Health continues to host both saliva and nasal swab
testing events throughout Minnesota. Tests are free and insurance is not required.
RECYCLING
Holiday lights recycling success
Thank you to all who dropped off holiday lights for recycling at City Hall. Close to 460
pounds of lights were recycled! If you missed the collection, holiday lights are collected for
free throughout the year at The Recycling Zone in Eagan.

Common Burdock (Arctium minus)
Common Burdock (Arctium minus) is a non-native biennial herb with large, basal heart-
shaped leaves, similar to rhubarb leaves, and is often referred to as wild rhubarb though it is
not edible. In its second year it grows stalks of seed heads up to 3 feet in height. Seed
heads have numerous short, bristly, hooked hairs, that is said to have inspired Velcro. The
stalks are often still erect with seed heads intact throughout the winter, making it easy to
identify year-round.
Common Burdock is often found in open, disturbed areas and woodland edges, and along
roadsides. This invasive spreads by producing an abundance of seed, which is transported
by attaching itself to humans and other wildlife, as well as dispersed by wind and birds.
Purple flower heads usually appear in mid-summer.
Control methods for Common Burdock:
Hand-digging or pulling of small populations.
Repeated mowing in the first year to prevent seeding during the second year.
Herbicide application. This is best done in early spring or late fall when other native
vegetation is dormant.

helps design and install raingardens, native pollinator gardens, and shoreline
stabilization plantings, as well as maintenance workshops. Learn more and

The Dakota SWCD’s Tree Sale provides the opportunity for landowners to purchase
high quality bare root seedlings at a low cost for urban and rural conservation
purposes. The trees and shrubs are sold in bundles for larger planting areas; learn

The City’s Oheyawahe/Pilot Knob Task Force is looking for historical photos of the
original ‘knob’ for which Pilot Knob was named. If your family has photos of the 20’
knob predating 1927, please contact Krista Spreiter

Lawns to Legumes cost-share program grants are now available; learn more about
Individual Support Grants and Neighborhood Demonstration Grants for installing
pollinator-friendly native plantings. Individual Support Grant applications are due
