Arbor Day was first celebrated on April 10, 1872 in Nebraska City, Nebraska. An estimated one million trees were planted on this day. Spring is a good time to plant most species of trees. With the loss of our ash trees due to Emerald Ash Borer, it is more important than ever to restore our urban forest and plant for diversity. Planting a diversity of tree families and species will help protect our forests and urban tree canopy against future pests. Here are some recommended tree species for our area: Blue Beech (Carpinus caroliniana) Hackberry (Celtis occidentalis) Ironwood (Ostrya virginiana) Kentucky Coffeetree (Gymnocladus dioicus) Ohio Buckeye (Aesculus glabra) Croix American Elm (Ulmus Americana ‘St. Croix’) Swamp White Oak (Quercus bicolor) White Oak (Quercus alba) Remember to plant your new tree(s) in an appropriate spot according to its light and moisture needs. Where and how you plant your tree determines its health and longevity. Watch this helpful video on correct tree planting. Artwork in Valley Park Remove attached artwork by May 10 Many have noticed the growing number of works of art, ornaments, and other creations that have been left along the trails in Valley Park. While the artwork can be appreciated by park users, please remember to not hang or attach objects, including ornaments and artwork, to living trees and plants. This can damage our trees, shrubs, and plants, especially if left in place long-term. Please remove any artwork that is placed on living trees, shrubs, and plants by May 10, 2021. Any objects not removed by this date will be removed by City Staff. Thank you for helping to keep our forests healthy!
