NATURAL RESOURCES Photo by Josef Gorres, University of Vermont Help prevent the spread of jumping worms Jumping worms (Amynthas species), are non-native species of earthworms that live and feed in the leaf litter layer just above the soil surface and within the top few inches. They are called jumping worms, because they move like a snake and sometimes appear to be jumping. Jumping worms dramatically damage soils by feeding on and stripping vital nutrients from the topsoil. This in turn kills plants and increases erosion. Garden, landscape, and native vegetation may be killed or have difficulty growing. Their feeding techniques leave a unique texture behind similar to coffee grounds. Jumping worms can survive in a variety of conditions, including cold climates. What you can do: Don’t buy worms advertised as jumping worms, snake worms, Alabama jumpers or crazy worms. Dispose of unwanted bait worms in the trash. Never release any bait into the environment. Be on the lookout for jumping worms in soil, potted plants, mulch, or compost. Do not transport soil, including transplanted or ‘plant swap’ plants. If you purchase worms for composting, know how to identify the species you are buying. Follow Great Lakes Worm Watch’s ABC’s of composting with earthworms safely. Remove and clean soil and vegetation from gear, tools, animals, boots, pets, and vehicles, before entering and after leaving parks and recreation sites. Stay on designated trails and roads. View the video Invasive jumping worms: Impacts and prevention If you are unable to do the work of removal yourself, there are native restoration companies that perform removal and treatment as well.
