Dog Park memorial
An informal 'dedication' of a gathering spot at the City’s off-leash Dog Park was held last
Saturday.
Eagan resident Gregory Nelson and his dog Daisy had been avid users of the Dog Park
until Greg passed away in February of this year.
Seeking to create a memorial for Greg, fellow dog park user Mario Vai established a
GoFundMe account, which raised money for a memorial bench, and four trees (two of which
were provided by Greg’s father). As the trees mature, they will provide shade for the seating
area. The Mendota Heights Public Works Department installed a concrete pad, set the
bench, planted the four trees, and added mulch around the area.
This Saturday!
The Mendota Heights Fire Department is serving up fire prevention info “TO GO” this year!
As part of Fire Prevention Week, this year’s theme highlights fire safety in the kitchen. The
public is invited to attend a free community event on Saturday, October 10 at the Fire
Station, 2121 Dodd Road. Drive thru the parking lot of the newly renovated Fire Station any
time between 9 and 11 a.m. to see firefighters, wave to Snuffers, receive fun activity packs
for the kids, and more! Each household can register to win a door prize of a $100 VISA gift
card and toy fire truck, to be drawn at a later time.
Households are asked to attend in separate vehicles, with all attendees staying in their
vehicles for the entire event. View the COVID-19 Preparedness Plan for this event on the
City’s website.

Public meeting announcements
There will a City Council Work Session at City Hall on Tuesday, October 13, beginning at 2
p.m. to discuss possible TIF assistance for a commercial development at 2393 Pilot Knob
Road; the City’s agreement with ISD 197 for Sibley Park; charitable gambling, and
employee personnel policies.
Preregister to vote by Tuesday, October 13
Residents are encouraged to preregister to vote if they are not already registered. You may
preregister up until 5 p.m. on October 13, 2020. After that date, you must register when you
vote. To check your registration status or to register visit MNVotes.org. You can also print
out a paper form or obtain a paper form from City Hall.
You will need to register if you have never voted before, if you have changed your name or
address since you last voted (including moving to another apartment in the same building),
or if you have not voted in four years.
Early voting options
Residents are encouraged to vote early this year if
possible, either by mail or in person at City Hall.
Vote early in person
Early (absentee) voting at City Hall is underway through
Nov. 2. Vote early during regular business hours, 7 a.m. to
4:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday; 7 to 11:30 a.m. on Fridays. Extended absentee voting
hours will be available Saturday, October 31, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Monday, Nov. 2,
until 5 p.m.

To vote by mail, visit MNVotes.org to apply for an absentee ballot to be mailed to you.
Ballots can be returned via mail, dropped off in person at City Hall during business hours, or
dropped into the brown utility drop box located in City Hall's turnaround.

RECYCLING
Paper Shred and Fall Clean-Up Day
Thank you to those who participated in last Saturday's Fall Clean-up and Paper Shred that
took place at Mendakota Park. 17,140 pounds of paper were shredded, and about 30 bikes
were dropped off, with 25 bikes able to be reused. Thanks for keeping the community clean
and green!
Where to bring brush and leaves this fall
South St. Paul’s Compost Site is open to any resident in Dakota County. Open Friday thru
Sunday, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., the compost site accepts leaves, garden waste, grass and
sod.
Brush and tree waste can be taken to Davey Tree (former S & S Tree and Horticultural
Specialists, Inc.) located at 405 Hardman Avenue South. They will accept brush and tree
waste (no stumps), from 8 a.m. to noon, on the following dates:
Saturday, October 17
Saturday, November 14
Note that they will be closed after November 14.
NATURAL RESOURCES
Removing invasives at Copperfield Ponds
Great River Greening and volunteers who had pre-registered will be removing invasives,
including Amur Maple and buckthorn, at Copperfield Ponds this Saturday, October 10.
Volunteers will be helping to open up trail views by clearing the dense understory of
invasive species and creating space for native plant restoration. Amur Maple is a species
native to China and Japan, which is widely planted as an ornamental shrub. Like buckthorn,
it has escaped its landscape setting to invade our natural areas.
Now is the time for buckthorn removal
If you recognize some of the above images and notice a tree or shrub that is still green late
into the fall, you may have buckthorn on your property. Buckthorn is an invasive, non-native
understory tree that is often pruned as a shrub. This invasive tree outcompetes its native
counterparts by growing rapidly and leafing out early, as well as holding its leaves late into
the fall. Learn how to identify buckthorn and the best methods for removal.
Recent highlights
The City of Mendota Heights is developing a Natural Resources Management Plan to
manage invasive plant species and restore healthy native plant communities.
Help keep surface waters clean by adopting a storm drain near you to clean. Learn

The Mendota Heights Public Education team has created short
videos and other resource materials to learn about fire safety -
24/7 from the comforts of anywhere. These resources are a
wonderful way for children and families, and anyone in the
community to learn fire safety. It's also a convenient resource for
educators. Several of the videos feature Mendota Heights
firefighters teaching this valuable information. Explore the Fire
