Mark your calendars
The Mendota Heights Fire Department is serving up fire prevention info “TO GO” this year!
As part of Fire Prevention Week next week, this year’s theme highlights fire safety in the
kitchen. The public is invited to attend a free community event on Saturday, October 10 at
the Fire Station, 2121 Dodd Road. Drive thru the parking lot of the newly renovated Fire
Station any time between 9 and 11 a.m. to see firefighters, wave to Snuffers, receive fun
activity packs for the kids, and more! Each household can register to win a door prize of a
$100 VISA gift card and toy fire truck, to be drawn at a later time.
Households are asked to attend in separate vehicles, with all attendees staying in their
vehicles for the entire event. View the COVID-19 Preparedness Plan for this event on the
City’s website.

Early voting options
Residents are encouraged to vote early this year if
possible, either by mail or in person at City Hall.
Vote early in person
Early (absentee) voting at City Hall is underway through
Nov. 2. Vote early during regular business hours, 7 a.m. to
4:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday; 7 to 11:30 a.m. on Fridays. Extended absentee voting
hours will be available Saturday, October 31, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Monday, Nov. 2,
until 5 p.m.
Vote early by mail
To vote by mail, visit MNVotes.org to apply for an absentee ballot to be mailed to you.
Ballots can be returned via mail, dropped off in person at City Hall during business hours, or
dropped into the brown utility drop box located in City Hall's turnaround.
Preregister to vote
Residents are encouraged to preregister to vote if they are not already registered. You may
preregister up until 5 p.m. on October 13, 2020. After that date, you must register when you
vote. To check your registration status or to register visit MNVotes.org. You can also print
out a paper form or obtain a paper form from City Hall.
You will need to register if you have never voted before, if you have changed your name or
address since you last voted (including moving to another apartment in the same building),
or if you have not voted in four years.
Candidate forum for City elections available for
replay
If you missed Town Square TV's live candidate forum on Sept. 10, you can can view the

Accepting applications for winter seasonal
positions
If you enjoy the outdoors and would like to earn part-time income, the City is currently
accepting applications for the following positions:

RECYCLING
This Saturday!
Saturday, Oct 3 | 8 a.m. to noon at Mendakota Park
Mendota Heights residents can take advantage of these two recycling events on the same
day, at the same location. Please note that there are important changes to what will be
accepted at the Fall Clean-Up event this year. Visit the City's website for event details.
Where to bring brush and leaves this fall
South St. Paul’s Compost Site is open to any resident in Dakota County. Open Friday thru
Sunday, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., the compost site accepts leaves, garden waste, grass and
sod.
Brush and tree waste can be taken to Davey Tree (former S & S Tree and Horticultural
Specialists, Inc.) located at 405 Hardman Avenue South. They will accept brush and tree
waste (no stumps), from 8 a.m. to noon, on the following dates:
Saturday, October 3
Saturday, October 17
Saturday, November 14
Note that they will be closed after November 14.
NATURAL RESOURCES
Now is the time for buckthorn removal
Buckthorn is an invasive, non-native understory tree that is often pruned as a shrub. This
invasive tree outcompetes its native counterparts by growing rapidly and leafing out early,
as well as holding its leaves late into the fall. If you notice a tree or shrub in your yard that is
still green, it may be buckthorn. There are two varieties of Buckthorn: Glossy Buckthorn and
Common (European) Buckthorn. Glossy buckthorn has smooth, glossy, toothless leaves
that are oval in shape. The bark is dark in color, with light-colored spots, and contains thin,
sharp thorns. Common buckthorn looks similar except branches contain thorns at the
terminal. Both can often be confused with the native Black Cherry tree, so identify carefully
before removal. If you are unsure if you have buckthorn on your property, please contact
City Staff (contact information below) for a site visit and proper identification.

Control methods for buckthorn:
Pulling: Best done when trees are small - 1” in diameter or less.
Cutting and herbicide treatment: Best used on large trees in the fall, but can be
done anytime, except for the spring months during heavy sap flow. Cut buckthorn
close to the ground, and immediately treat the stump with herbicide.
Herbicide alternatives: Cut stumps can also be covered using a Buckthorn Baggie,
other dark-colored plastic bag, or similar alternative when herbicide use is not
desirable. Please make sure your bag or alternative is tightly secured to the stump,
and fanned out at the bottom to catch any new shoots. Leave the bag on the stump
for a minimum of one year, and then remember to remove!
The City also has a weed wrench for mechanical removal that can be loaned out to
residents free of charge. Contact City Staff, below, for more information.
If you are unable to do the work of removal yourself, there are native restoration companies
that perform removal and treatment as well.
