Small business relief grant programs available
On August 4, the City Council approved a Small Business Relief Grant program to
designate approximately $85,500 of the City’s CARES Act funds to assist Mendota Heights
small businesses that have suffered financially due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Grants of
up to $10,000 will help businesses cover payroll, rent, mortgage payments, utility bills and
other operational expenses since March 1, 2020. For-profit businesses in Mendota Heights
that meet qualification requirements are encouraged to apply.
The program is being administered through the Dakota County Community Development
Agency (CDA) and follows the same guidelines as the Dakota County Small Business Relief
Program.
To qualify, an applicant must:
Employ the equivalent of 50 or fewer full-time workers.
Be a private for-profit business that has a permanent physical location in Mendota
Heights, Minnesota.
Be majority owned by a permanent resident of Minnesota.
Be in good standing with the Minnesota Secretary of State and Minnesota
Department of Revenue as of March 1, 2020.
Be in good standing with Dakota County and the City of Mendota Heights.
Be able to demonstrate financial hardship as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

business-relief-grants. Applications will be accepted through 4:30 p.m. on Friday,
August 14. If the number of applications exceeds the available funding, a randomized
selection process will take place. All applicants will be contacted via email by August 26,
2020.
By applying, businesses can be considered for either the Dakota County Small Business
Relief Program or the City of Mendota Heights Small Business Grant Program. If a business
has already applied for a Dakota County Small Business Relief Grant through the Dakota
County CDA portal, it does not need to apply again to be considered for a City of Mendota
Heights program grant.

Mendota Heights businesses can receive a limited
supply of free disposable masks at City Hall
The City of Mendota Heights has received a limited number of disposable face masks which
have been made available by the State of Minnesota for distribution to local businesses.
Interested businesses may receive up to 200 of these masks, per week, by coming to City
Hall and filling out a short form requesting the masks at the front desk.
This distribution is in partnership with the Dakota County Regional Chamber of Commerce
and is part of the State’s efforts to contain COVID-19.

The employment application period has been extended to 11:30 a.m. on August 14.

Heights
Minnesota’s Stay Safe order is in effect. It is important
to note that protections for those in our communities
that are most vulnerable to the virus are still in place
and are those at greatest risk of serious illness are
encouraged to continue staying home. For more

Effective July 25, 2020, per the Governor's Executive Order 20-81, people in Minnesota are
required to wear a face covering in all public indoor spaces and businesses, unless you are
alone, and other exceptions as noted. For more information and answers to questions,

In addition to the previously announced safety guidelines for City Hall visitors, face
coverings are required in all City facilities. Please follow the posted safety signage;
residents are still encouraged to use non-contact methods of communication, such as

phone and email, to conduct business when possible.
Soaking in the sunshine
The Black-eyed Susans were in full bloom this week in the prairie restoration area, in the
solar field west of City Hall.
Extended hours for absentee
voting at City Hall
Absentee voting for the August 11 primary is underway
through August 10. Extended hours will be available for
absentee voting on:
Saturday, August 8, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Monday, August 10, 7 a.m. until 5 p.m.
In-person voters may experience longer wait times to allow for new safety procedures. For

Filing for City Offices ends August 11
The filing period for Mayor (2 year term) and two City Council seats (4 year terms) is
underway and ends at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, August 11, 2020. The filing fee is $5.00.
Candidates must file an Affidavit of Candidacy with the City Clerk’s office.
The requirements for running for public office include:
Candidate must be eligible to vote in Minnesota.
Candidate is, or will be on assuming the office, 21 years of age or older.
Maintained residence in Mendota Heights for 30 days before the General Election.
Candidates’ names will be placed on the November 3, 2020 General Election ballot. Link to

Public meeting announcements
City Council meeting time change beginning in September
Effective with its first meeting in September, the City Council has changed its meeting times
from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. The August 18 meeting will still begin at 5 p.m. as previously
scheduled.
City Council Work Session
There will be a City Council Work Session to discuss the fiscal year 2021 proposed budget
on Thursday, August 13 at 1:30 p.m. This meeting will take place at City Hall.

Adopt-a-drain has kept our local waterways cleaner and
healthier with 7,000+ storm drain adopters who have
adopted over 12,000 drains, keeping over 200,000 pounds
of debris out of our lakes, rivers and streams.
Their largest community outreach effort, The Minnesota
State Fair, was cancelled this year, so they're hoping you
can help spread the word! If you've already adopted a drain,
refer a friend to do so also. For any new adopter that names
you as their referrer when they sign up between now and Labor Day (9/7/2020), both you
and the new adopter will receive a free Adopt-a-Drain tote bag—perfect for showing off your
dedication to the environment (while supplies last). They can find adoptable storm drains

Memorial Fishing Derby
There were 29 youth participants who took their chances
on catching a whopper at Roger Lake's pier on August 6.
Participants were able to socially distance by households
using the brightly marked X's on the dock's floor, and had
scheduled fishing times. Thank you to all who
participated and followed the safety protocols!

The Goombas live in concert
NEW DATE & TIME
Friday, August 21 | 6 to 8 p.m.
Mendakota Park
Popular area band “The Goombas” will have an in-
person concert at Mendakota Park on Friday, August 21, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. The rain date
is Sunday, August 23.
The concert will be held in a manner to be in compliance with Governor Walz’s Executive
Order for COVID-19 for public gatherings. There will be a maximum of 250 people allowed
on site. Once that number is met, no additional people will be permitted to enter the park.
Because of COVID-19 social distancing requirements, all participants will need to group
themselves by household, and sit and remain located in one of the appropriately spaced
painted circles which will be on the ground. Audience members will be reminded to not
congregate during or following the concert, and to respect other attendees’ space. View the
