Safety update . . .
Since Wednesday of this week, following the tragic events in Minneapolis Monday evening,
Mendota Heights Police and Fire responders have been assisting with mutual aid calls to
our neighboring cities in need. They continue to stand ready.
While they follow an established plan, their first priority is to ensure the well-being and
safety of the residents and businesses of Mendota Heights, and our partner cities of Lilydale
and Mendota. Updates will be posted as available on the MHPD Facebook page.

Minnesota’s Stay Safe order is in effect. It is
important to note that protections for those in our
communities that are most vulnerable to the virus are
still in place and are those at greatest risk of serious
illness are encouraged to continue staying home. For

Prepare for travel impacts on eastbound 1-494 this
weekend
Plan for possible delays on eastbound I-494 in the southeast metro as MnDOT work
continues on I-494 between Hwy 3 and Concord St. beginning May 29.
Starting at 6 p.m. Fri, May 29, crews will begin closing the left lane on eastbound I-
494. By 9 p.m., all traffic will be in a single lane between Hwy 3 and Concord St.
Starting at 6 p.m. Fri, May 29, crews will close the ramp from eastbound Hwy 62 to
eastbound I-494 (note the access to Hwy 52 will remain open).
Starting at 8 p.m. Fri, May 29, crews will close the ramp from southbound Hwy 52 to
eastbound I-494.
All of the lane and ramp closures are expected to remain closed through 5 a.m. Mon, June
1. Please plan ahead, allow for extra travel time and know your route.
The lane closures are part of a larger project on I-494 to repave the road, update drainage
and repair seven bridges on an eight-mile stretch of I-494 between the Minnesota River and
Third Ave. in South St. Paul. During the two-year project, crews will use 14 full or partial
closures of I-494 in order to compete the work by fall 2020.
Residents that live near I-494 between the Minnesota and Mississippi rivers may hear noise
as crews work to remove pavement, set barrier and pave the road throughout the project
area.

Planning for a backyard swimming pool? What you
need to know about permits.
With the recent “shelter-in-place” rules and Mendota Heights’ residents looking to provide
added outdoor activities for their families, the City of Mendota Heights has noticed an
increase of new swimming pool requests or installations throughout the city.
Please know that a swimming pool is defined by the city as: “Any structure, chamber, or
tank containing an artificial body of water for swimming, diving, relaxation, or recreational
use including special purpose pools and wading pools, having a water surface area
exceeding one hundred (100) square feet and a water depth greater than eighteen inches
(18") at any point.”
A building permit is required prior to the installation of any new permanent, in-ground
swimming pool. A temporary above-ground type swimming pool that can be disassembled
or moved after seasonal use does not need a building permit, but does require an above-
ground swimming pool zoning permit. If you plan to build a permanent deck or platform
around an above-ground pool, this will require a building permit.
Any application for a swimming pool permit must include the following:
Site Plan. A plan indicating the size, type and location of the pool; location of existing
house, fencing and other improvements on the lot; location of filter unit, pump, and wiring
indicating the type of such units; location of structures on adjacent lots; location of backflush
and drainage outlets; grading plan; finished elevations and final treatment (decking,
landscaping, etc.) around pool; location of existing overhead or underground wiring, utility
easements, trees and similar features; location of any water heating unit.
Pools must be at least 10' from any rear or side yard lot line, and at least 10' from the
principal structure (dwelling). The filter unit, pump, heating unit and any other noisemaking
mechanical equipment must be at least 25' from any adjacent residential structure and not
closer than 8' to any lot line. Pools are not allowed within the front yard area, except for
small kiddie or pet pools.
Fence Plan. The pool area, either the back yard or the pool structure itself, must be
enclosed with fencing at least 5’ to 6’ in height. Fences must have self-closing and self-
latching gate(s), with provisions for locking. For above-ground pools, the city will allow such
pools to have a fence on top of the upper edge of the pool, provided the 5’-6’ enclosure is
met from the bottom of the pool to the top of the fence, and any access gate or ladder can
be removed or locked to prevent access. Automatic or self-placed pool covers are not
allowed as a substitute for fencing.

Mendota Heights Par 3 is open
for play
Call 651-454-9822 to reserve a tee time. Additional
rules are required for play to assist with player and
staff safety during the pandemic. The course is
walking-only, and the Clubhouse is staffed but closed

Residents are encouraged to preregister to vote up until 5:00 pm on July 21; the
Minnesota State Primary takes place on August 11.
Register for the Officer Scott Patrick Memorial 5K Walk/Run for Minnesota Special
Olympics on July 11. Register online under Special Events or print and mail
a registration form.
City-sponsored events and recreation programs cancelled through July 6.
Respond to the 2020 Census online, by phone (844-330-2020), or by mail.
Apply for a census job; pay starts at $22/hour in Dakota County.
Dakota County extends protective equipment donation drive; donate items at
Western Service Center and all Library locations.

RECYCLING
Curbside pickup special for mattress recycling in
Dakota County
From now until Labor Day (September 7, 2020), Certified Recycling will be offering curbside
pickup for mattress and box spring recycling at a reduced price. Contact Certified Recycling
to request a pickup within 7 days by calling 952-894-1448 or visit Certified Recycling's
website. Costs are $45 for the first item and $25 for each additional piece. Certified will be
following COVID-19 Guidelines and social distancing.

South St. Paul’s Compost Site is now open
Saturdays and Sundays from 9-6! Bring
your leaves, grass, sod and garden waste
for FREE until May 31. Not accepted items:
woodchips, mulch, branches or tree
waste. Beginning June 5 the site will begin charging $.50 per small bag and $1.00 for
larger bags or barrels, and will be open Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays 9am to 6pm.
Take larger items to Davey’s, formerly known as S&S Tree: 651-337-4089. Due to the
COVID-19 mandate for social distancing, Davey Tree must now staff the disposal site.
There will be a $10 charge per load (any size). Payment will be accepted for the exact
amount or with a check made out to Davey Tree. The new hours for disposal are Saturdays
from 8am to noon and closed on holidays.
