THE LATEST
Stay Safe Mendota Heights
Minnesota’s Stay Safe order is in effect. It is important to note that protections for those in
our communities that are most vulnerable to the virus are still in place and are those at
greatest risk of serious illness are encouraged to continue staying home. For more
information visit mn.gov/covid19.
Residents encouraged to preregister to vote
The Minnesota State Primary will take place August 11. If you are not already registered to
vote, you may preregister up until 5:00 pm on July 21. After that date, you must register
at the polls or when you cast your absentee ballot. Voter registration can be completed
online at MNVotes.org, or print out a paper form and mail it in. If you are unsure if you are
registered to vote, you can also check your registration status at this website.
You will need to register if you have never voted before, if you have changed your name or
address since you last voted (including moving to another apartment in the same building),
or if you have not voted in four years.
Minnesota does allow voters to register on Election Day at the polls with the required
identification, however voters are encouraged to preregister as much as possible.

Officer Scott Patrick Memorial 5K Walk/Run
rescheduled for July 11
Support more than 8,200 athletes of Special Olympics of Minnesota by participating in the
5K. Proceeds benefit year-round sports training and competition for these talented athletes.
Registration is $25 before 6pm on July 10, or $30 on the day of the event.
Participants will receive a T-shirt and have an opportunity to compete for the top-three male
and female finishers in age categories 19 and under, 20-49 Open Division, and 50+ Master
Division. There will be an awards ceremony and prize drawing upon conclusion of the race.

Free meals for children
With school closings, several local restaurants and school districts have offered to provide
free lunches for children and students in need. Use this interactive map to locate a provider
near you.
Mendota Heights Par 3 is open
for play
Call 651-454-9822 to reserve a tee time. Additional
rules are required for play to assist with player and
staff safety during the pandemic. The course is
walking-only, and the Clubhouse is staffed but closed
to the public. Visit the Par 3 web page for more info.
Reserve a weekly tee time
Instead of league play, weekly tee times are available for Juniors and Women's golf. Check

Apply for a census job; pay starts at $22/hour in Dakota County.
Dakota County extends protective equipment donation drive; donate items at
Western Service Center and all Library locations.

Planting a greener future
Residents picked up their Spring Tree Sale orders last Saturday at Public Works. A limited
amount of trees were available through the City's partnership with Tree Trust, and they sold
out very quickly this year. When planted, the community will enjoy fifty new shade trees
benefiting the environment through increased canopy cover, wildlife habitat, cleaner air and
water, species diversity, and, of course, adding beauty to the city.
What’s that Blooming?
Spring has definitely sprung, and many plants are now in full-bloom. However, some of
those blooming plants may be taking over your yard, as well as our parks and public open
spaces. Below are some invasive plant species that are blooming now. If you think you have
these invasive plants on your property, do what you can to remove them in order to control
their spread. If you are unsure if you have invasives plants in your yard, City Staff can help
you with identification. There are also additional resources available through the Minnesota
Department of Agriculture: mda.state.mn.us/plants-insects/noxious-invasive-weed-program.
Garlic Mustard
Highly aggressive invasive that produces hundreds
of seeds. Flowers are white, and form small,
rounded clusters. Removal is easily done by hand-
pulling.
Yellow Rocket
Invades disturbed areas, woodland edges, and
roadsides. It is a biennial, so removing in the first
year can be a strategy for control.
Leafy Spurge
Classified as a noxious weed, this plant can be
extremely hard to eradicate. Leafy Spurge has
large clusters of many small, yellow-green flowers,
and slender alternating leaves. It can be pulled or
controlled with herbicide. Biocontrols for Leafy Spurge are also available. Contact the
Minnesota Department of Agriculture for more information.

Watch for information in your mailbox
Residents will begin receiving a postcard in the mail in early June regarding a discounted
Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) treatment program for ash trees on their property. This program is

Make a difference
Keep surface waters clean by adopting a storm drain
near you. Clean up around the drain you adopt twice a
month, and track the amount of trash and pollutants
collected. This is a great household project for kids and

Compost Site is open
South St. Paul’s Compost Site is now open
Saturdays and Sundays from 9-6! Bring
your leaves, grass, sod and garden waste
for FREE until May 31. Not accepted items:
woodchips, mulch, branches or tree
waste. Beginning June 5 the site will begin
charging $.50 per small bag and $1.00 for
larger bags or barrels, and will be open
Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays 9am to 6pm.
Take larger items to Davey’s, formerly known as S&S Tree: 651-337-4089. Due to the
COVID-19 mandate for social distancing, Davey Tree must now staff the disposal site.
There will be a $10 charge per load (any size). Payment will be accepted for the exact
amount or with a check made out to Davey Tree. The new hours for disposal are Saturdays
from 8am to noon and closed on holidays.
Purchase a compost bin at a discounted rate while

Help your yard and save money through the annual Recycling Association of Minnesota's
sale. Most local sites for rain barrels are sold-out, but compost bins are still available at the
WestRock - St. Paul location while supplies last. Dakota County residents get 30 percent off
when they order online at recycleminnesota.org by applying the promo code Dakota. Items
will need to be picked up on the date specified.
The Recycling Zone is open
Residents can once again bring chemicals, electronics and more to The Recycling Zone in
Eagan. Please be patient as it will take longer to safely unload vehicles. The Reuse Zone
will remain closed until further notice. In response to the pandemic there are new drop-off
guidelines for safety: co.dakota.mn.us/Environment/RecyclingZone.
