This partnership offers a citywide discount; watch for a postcard with program details to land in your mailbox soon if you haven’t received it already. Additionally, you can take steps to prevent the spread of EAB by doing the following:  Don’t move firewood! EAB can emerge from the infected wood for two years after cutting.  Avoid removing, pruning, or cutting of ash trees during the active period (May 1 – September 30)  Consult a tree care professional to decide if treating healthy, high- value ash trees with systemic insecticide is a feasible option.  Look for signs of EAB: woodpecker activity, D-shaped exit holes, blonding or light- colored patches of missing bark, defoliation, and slow leaf- emergence.  Remove infected trees and dispose of wood and debris properly, by sending them to the nearest Ash Tree Waste Disposal Site during the low-activity period (Oct. 1 – May 1), and within your quarantine area (Dakota County). Or print just one to pass around at the very start and ask for feedback or questions. When you do print, print in black and white and on both sides of the paper. Set your default setting to those settings. Ask for IT support if you need to. Computer Power At the end of the night, turn off your computer and monitors to avoid electricity draw when you are not at work. This so called “vampire” draw really does add up: According to the US Department of Energy, an appliance constantly drawing one watt of electricity is equivalent to 9kWh per year, adding up to $1 in annual costs per appliance. Think of how many appliances there are at your home or workplace! Flatware Bring your own plate and cutlery to work to leave in your desk; that way, you’ll never be caught without! This will dramatically decrease the amount of trash and disposables you go through. When you are going to a fast food restaurant for lunch, tell them “no napkins, no spoon please!” to help reduce unnecessary waste. Our collective actions to add up.
