Page 2 Friday News Holiday Lights Recycling Ending Soon There are just a few days left to recycle your holiday lights, and electrical appliance and phone cords at the Mendota Heights City Hall. Holiday lights are also accepted year round at The Recy- cling Zone in Eagan. Cord adapters, battery packs, plastic rope lights, and CFL lights are not ac- cepted. For more information, visit www.dakotacounty.us search Recycling Zone. Recycle Plastic Bags Separately Plastic bags, of any kind, do not belong in your home recycling bin. Bags wrap around machinery at recycling facilities causing jams and damage, effecting the whole sorting process. Shutting down the sorting lines to cut bags free results in lost productivity and lost profit for facilities. Bring your plastic bags to retailers for proper recycling, such as Target, Walmart, Kohls or Cub Foods. Ask Customer Service for their collection bins if you don't see them. You can also bring them to City Hall; look for the collec- tion bin in the main entryway. Also accepted: bread bags, bubble wrap, air pil- lows, dry cleaning bags, newspaper bags and shrink wrap surrounding packs of toilet paper, paper towels and water bottles. At home, bag your regular recyclables in paper bags which allows the contents to easily be sorted at the recycling facili- ties. If you bag your recyclables in a plastic bag and tie it closed, there is a good chance the workers will pick your bag off the line as "trash," wasting your hard work and their time. It is best to leave it loose. Bonus points for reusing your paper bag multiple times! Thompson Park Organics Drop Site A free residential organics drop site is located at Thompson County Park, 360 Butler Ave E, West St. Paul. The site provides residents with a convenient way to manage organics, such as food waste and soiled paper. According to the MPCA, a third of our trash is made up of organic materials. The material is made into compost, which is used to add valuable nutrients back into the soil. Want to participate? Sign up by calling 952.891.7557 or email organics@co.dakota.mn.us. You’ll receive a welcome kit mailed to your home with a free container label, com- postable bags and details on how to recycle organics. You’ll also receive the access code to the locked drop-off location. Common items include in the organics recycling bin include: All food waste Paper towels, napkins, tissues Paper egg cartons and egg shells Houseplant trimmings and flowers For questions, contact Cassandra Schueller at 651.255.1123 or email her at cassandras@mendota-heights.com. 1 The latest from the Mendota Heights Police Department FEBRUARY 2, 2018 CHIEF Kelly McCarthy SERGEANTS Eric Petersen Tanner Spicer Peyton Fleming POLICE OFFICERS John Larrive Todd Rosse Chad Willson Jeff VonFeldt Denise Urmann Philip McCarty Weston Raberge Peter Renteria Cara Hogan Tony Patton Ryan Yauch Tommy Albindia INVESTIGATIONS Nick Gorgos SCHOOL RESOURCE OFFICER Steve Hilyar COMMUNITY SERVICE OFFICER Eric Hagelee SUPPORT STAFF Kim Richter Trista Miller Shayna Hoechst Becky Pentel RESERVES Jim Knox Jeff Parker CHAPLAINS Butch Millett John Snider Alberto Vargas Lynn Liberman Sue Plucker Joel Detlefsen Lenny Andrie If you are attending a Super Bowl party:  Avoid drinking too much alcohol too fast. Pace yourself—eat, take breaks, alternate with non-alcoholic drinks.  Designate your sober driver before the party begins and give that person your vehicle keys.  If impaired, don’t even think about getting behind the wheel. Ask a sober friend for a ride home; call a cab, friend or family member to come and get you; or stay where you are and sleep it off until you are sober.  Remember, Friends Don’t Let Friends Drive Drunk. Take the keys and never let a friend leave your sight if you think they are about to drive while impaired. If you are hosting a Super Bowl party:  Serve lots of food—particularly high-protein dishes—and be sure to include lots of non-alcoholic beverages.  Stop serving alcohol at the beginning of the third quarter of the game—begin serving coffee and dessert.  Be sure all of your guests designate their drivers in advance, or help arrange ride-sharing with sober drivers.  Keep the numbers for local cab companies handy, and take the keys away from everyone who is thinking of driving while impaired.
