2006-02-24 Friday NewsThe Friday News February 24, 2006 SILENT AUCTION The City Council was visited at this Tuesday’s meeting by Matt and Cathy Geiser, who came to advertise Mendota Elementary School’s Annual Silent Auction (see attached). The Auction will be held Friday March 10th at “The Bluffs of Mendota” in Diamond Jim’s Mall. Proceeds from the auction go to help fund improvements to the school. DO IT BEST Do It Best Hardware Store, who recently closed their doors, auctioned off their merchandise this Thursday. Guy attended the auction and reported back that there was a good turnout for the auction. He said that he tried bidding on a number of items, but that the bidding was spirited and he was always outbid. We at City Hall are all sorry to see Do It Best go, the owners were very nice and we all wanted them to succeed. CHOOSE CHOOSE is an organization of Saint Thomas Academy and Visitation students who educate their fellow students on Chemical Health issues. Members of CHOOSE attended this week’s City Council meeting to ask that the City adopt a Tobacco Free Policy in our parks. After listening to the students, the City Council was convinced that it was a good idea, and directed the City Staff to prepare a tobacco free policy for adoption at the next meeting. After adoption, signs will be provided free of charge to the City for placement in the parks. The signs will discourage use of tobacco in the parks.
