2010-10-15 Friday NewsOctober 15, 2010 Patch to Cover Mendota Heights City staff met this week with a representative from Patch.com who informed us that Mendota Heights will soon start to be covered by their organization. Patch.com is an online hub for local news, events and information. Patch.com is coming to Minnesota after being active in a number of other states around the nation. You will be able to get updates on local news, research events in the community and discover new restaurants, shops and other businesses in town. The launch date for the Mendota Heights site is early December of this year. The website address will be mendotaheights.patch. com. Please check out this site once it starts operation and share Mendota Heights news, events and information. F Comprehensive Pian The Metropolitan Council formally approved the Mendota Heights 2030 Comprehensive Plan at their meeting on Wednesday, October 13, 2010. This is the R culmination of years worth of work by the City Council, Planning Commission, residents and city staff. The Comprehensive Plan is the city's guidebook for I development and redevelopment for the next 20 years. Even though Mendota Heights is almost completely developed, it is still very important that we have this type of plan in place as our city redesigns itself in the coming decades. While this ® approval wraps up years of work, discussion on how to improve the process and shorten the amount of time it will take to complete and update our next plan has already started with city staff. Work on the 2040 Mendota Heights Comprehensive A Plan will start in 2018 so please do not forget where you store your files on your thoughts and vision for the next comprehensive plan. YMendoberri Open for Business The newest Mendota Heights restaurant opened for business this week. Mendoberri, located in The Village, offers both a sit down setting and a to go option for their product. They offer gourmet meals featuring organic products from local farmers and producers. N Please take the time to check out the newest business offering in Mendota Heights. The owners of Mendoberri are very excited to offer this type of dining in our city and have been a pleasure to work with. Mendoberri represents another new business in EMendota Heights during a tough economic time. Mendota Heights continues to thrive with new businesses like this, please stop in and check it out! WReminders S A few reminders for some upcoming events in our city. The Halloween Bonfire will be held again this year at the Mendota Plaza. Drop off of brush will run from October 25, 2010 through October 29, 2010. The city is also looking for residents who are interested in serving on one of our advisory commissions in 2011. The deadline to submit letters of interest is Friday, December 10, 2010. Finally, the annual Firefighters Dance is set for Saturday, November 13, 2010 at Royal Cliff. Tickets can be purchased from any of our firefighters. October 15, 2010 Airport Relations Commission Meeting The October 2010 Airport Relations Commission meeting was held this week and it was televised so residents could see two important issues that were discussed. Our MAC representative John McClung was in attendance to introduce himself and talk airport issues with the commissioners. In addition, staff from the MAC were in attendance to show the members a live demonstration of the new real time flight tracking program available on the MAC website. If you are interested in watching this meeting you can check it out online or watch for the rebroadcast on Town Square Television. Water Tower Back to Normal As you can see from driving past the water tower this week, the "former" look of the water tower has now been restored. Our contractor has completed almost all of the work on the project including the painting. Staff did receive a few comments from residents over the summer about the multi -colored look the tower had while it went through the different phases of the project. Staff is very happy to report that the work is near completion and the tower looks great with its new coat of paint. Nice job to those involved and thank you to Public Works for your patience over the summer with the noise and traffic at your facility. Mendota Officer Shepard spear -headed and pulled together a very successful Heights fundraiser for the family of Brigham Strole, the Lakeville Officer who recently, tragically died in an accident. The fundraiser was held Police locally, at our very own comedy club, the Joke Joint .With the Department generosity of local and national police departments, businesses and Support personal donors, the raffle and silent auction event raised well over Staff $6000 for the family. Todd Rosse Chad Willson Assist other Agency Thursday 2220 hours Jeff vonFeldt Several MHPD officers assisted West St. Paul PD on an armed Denise Urmann robbery that occurred in the 300 block of Marie Avenue East. 2 Michael Shepard Peyton Fleming suspects, one armed with a sawed off shotgun, approached the Jenny Fordham male and female victims and demanded money. Suspects then School Resource took off running. MHPD officers assisted in setting up a Officer perimeter for the K-9 unit. One suspect was located and taken Steven Meyer into custody. Investigation continues for the second suspect. Investigations Mario Reyes Domestic Friday 1150 hours Tanner Spicer Sergeants Officer Larrive was dispatched to Marie Park on a domestic Neil Garlock where a male was chasing a female. Officers located the parties Brian Convert' on the walking trail. Further investigation revealed that the male Eric Petersen party had been smoking marijuana and that he was in possession Reserves of a small amount of marijuana and a pipe. Charges are pending Randy Pentel Gino Messina against the male. Jesse Mettner Assist other Agency Saturday 1212 hours Andrew Quinlan Chief Officer Larrive assisted West St. Paul PD on a mother -daughter Mike domestic. The 14 year-old daughter was reportedly throwing Aschenbrener glass objects at her mother. Daughter had been out all night with -1- 10/14/2010 persons unknown to her mother. The daughter became upset when her mother questioned her about who she had been with and where she had been. Parties referred to Dakota County Crisis. DWI Saturday 1945 hours Sgt. Convery observed a vehicle being operated without headlights and failed to stop for a stop sign at Market and Linden Streets. Driver did poorly on field sobriety tests, and submitted to a PBT with a result of .208 BAC. The driver submitted to a blood test. Charges pending results from the MN BCA Lab. DOC/Detox Sunday 0142 hours Officer Wilson was patrolling the Moose Country parking lot during closing time when he observed a male fighting with several Moose Country staff members. The struggle began after they kicked the gent out: he immediately began urinating on the parked cars. Officer Willson exited his squad, identified himself as a police officer and told the male to stop. The intoxicated male took off running from Officer Willson SB on Hwy 13. Officer Willson and Reserve Officer Messina caught up to the suspect a short distance from the parking lot and took him into custody. The suspect blew a .238 on a PBT. He was cited for disorderly conduct and fleeing from police and taken to detox. Burglary Monday 1406 hours Officer Patrick responded to a residence on report of a theft from a residence. Upon arrival, he spoke with the homeowner and learned that while the family attended a football game outside the city, someone entered their unlocked home. Upon their return, they found two backpacks had been stolen with miscellaneous items, including a calculator, in each, and an I -Pod and their X -box had also been taken. Their family dog had been "guarding" the house, but she seemed calm upon their return and the neighbors did not report hearing any barking. Case referred to investigations. Theft from Vehicle Monday 1557 hours Officer Patrick was soon also called to the other side of town, where the a juvenile vehicle owner found that someone had entered his vehicle, while he was also at the same football game outside the city, and had stolen a backpack with a calculator inside. Case referred to investigations as well. Suspicion Tuesday 0210 hours Officer VonFeldt was dispatched to the area of Sibley High School on a 911 hang up call where the female caller was screaming for help, and then the phone went dead. Officer VonFeldt and Officer Shepard searched the area extensively on foot and could not locate anyone. Dispatch was unable to "ping" the phone as it had been turned off immediately after making the 911 call. Detox Wednesday 1858 hours Officer Rosse was dispatched to a local chemical dependency facility for a female resident who was possibly intoxicated. Upon arrival, the female resident had slurred speech and smelled of alcohol; however, she adamantly denied drinking until she took a PBT test, which showed her BAC to be .14. Then she started crying and got belligerent with officers. She advised officers that she could not go to jail or detox as she had court in Ramsey County the next morning for ....... you guessed it, a DWI arrest! She was transported to detox per Dakota County Crisis. Have a great week! Eric and Kim - 2 - NEWS The Pipeline L E T T E R Public Worksoo e Engineering Code Enforcement October 15, 2010 Public Works The Parks Crew blew out the sprinkler systems at Mendakota Park, Kensington Park, City Hall and the Fire Hall. The grass around the out buildings at Kensington South and Mendakota were fertilized. A broken water line was repaired at the Fire Hall. Rich checked bad spots in the sanitary sewer lines to make sure they were flowing free and there were no blockages. Public Works crew is making plans for site preparation to facilitate the Halloween bonfire at Mendota Plaza. Drop off of brush (no grass or leaves) will be allowed beginning on Monday, October 251H Engineering Highway 55/Mendota Heights Road Intersection - The construction project is underway. Existing pavement is being cut and removed, and improvement areas have been marked and staked. Project is designed to extend existing turn lanes, establish right -turn lanes, and reconfigure the signal to provide better traffic flow through the intersection. Residents should be aware of traffic revisions at this intersection due to construction through the end of December. 2010 Reconstruction/Rehabilitation Project - Work for the 2010 portion of the project is substantially complete. Remaining portions of wear course asphalt on Spring Street, John Street, and Simard Street will be completed in the spring of 2011. Assessment Hearing for the completed project will be held at Council at the October 19th meeting. Water Tower Rehabilitation - The external renovations are substantially complete. The process of re -charging the water tower is under way. St. Paul Regional Water Services will be installing telemetry for the tower on Monday (10/18). The tower is then scheduled for disinfection on Tuesday (10/19). The tank will then be filled and allowed to rest for 72 hours when it will then be tested for leaks, bacteria, chlorine residual, and flavor. If all tests pass it will then be brought back online to feed the water supply system by the end of October. Restoration work to the grounds around the tower and general site cleanup items are still being completed. 2011 Street Reconstruction Project (Wagon Wheel Trail) - Staff is preparing for the Public Hearing scheduled for the November 16th Council meeting. Notices will be sent to the affected property owners informing them of the Public Hearing. Project is proposed to reconstruct Wagon Wheel Trail from Lexington Avenue to Dodd Road, install storm sewer with curb & gutter, and provide for a pedestrian trail along the length of the project.
