2003-05-23 Friday News The Friday News May 23, 2003 Garden Club The Mendota Heights Garden Club continued the “annual tradition” of donating a Red Splendor Crab Apple Tree to augment landscape plantings at City Hall. Since 1989, the club has donated fifteen trees, most of which are still flourishing. This year, a 2” balled and burlaped tree was installed along Victoria Curve, replacing a tree that did not survive last winter. As they have done in the past, Public Works staff picked up and planted the donated tree. Prior to planting the tree, they added soil amendments to the planting hole. The Garden Club also installed and maintains the flower planting bed that surrounds the City Hall entrance sign. Fire at Axel's Grill On Tuesday 5/20 at 1:26 am the Fire Department was dispatched to a shed next to Axel's Grill which was on fire. On arrival, the department found a storage shed fully involved with fire. The shed was used to store used table clothes, towels, light bulbs, charcoal, pans, etc. The fire was contained to the shed and no damage was done to the restaurant itself. The cause was determined to be a discarded cigarette and the total loss was estimated at $3,500. Truck Rollover Also on Tuesday 5/20 (at 2:30 pm), the Fire Department was called to assist on a truck rollover at Center Pointe Road and Hwy 13. The driver had escaped but fuel and hydraulic fluid were leaking and the truck was still running. Initial attempts to shut off the engine were not successful. Upon further attempts it was discovered that someone had wired the fuel switch in the “on” position, not allowing the truck to shut off.
