City Administrator Search Process
The City Council made a number of decisions
related to the soon to be vacant city
administrator position at their meeting on
Tuesday night. The council named John
Mazzitello as the acting city administrator
effective August 18, 2011. In addition, they
established a process and a timeline for the
search for a permanent replacement. The
council also updated the job description and
the position profile to reflect the duties that the
new administrator will be performing. Sandie
Thone and Tamara Schutta will coordinate the
search at the city staff level. The draft timeline
has an application deadline of August 25,
2011 and a job offer being made in October of
this year. Staff will update the process of the
search through the Friday News. If you have
questions please see Sandie or Tamara.
A Busy City Council Meeting
The city council had a very busy day on
Tuesday. The members heard update reports
from the Dakota Communications Center, the
Fire Department and our city auditors. In
addition, the council awarded the bid on the
Knollwood Lane neighborhood project that will
start soon, approved the purchase of new
playground equipment for Kensington Park and
authorized staff to go out to bid for a new fuel
system at Public Works. The city council also
held a work session on the city administrator
search process and a closed session to
discuss labor negotiations. A very busy
Tuesday for the city council and city staff that
helped get a lot of work completed. Thank you
to the city council for your patience and
direction on what turned out to be a long day of
meetings for each of you.

Airport Relations Commission
The Airport Relations Commission is taking on
an interesting project this year. With three new
commissioners this year and the high volume of
information that is shared with the city by the
Metropolitan Airports Commission each month,
commissioners have taken on items of interest
in tracking pieces of specific information that
are included in the information we receive.
Commissioners are taking on the tracking of
items such as complaints submitted to the MAC
by city, tracking of specific high noise events
and statistical analysis of how the airplane
departures are spread out over the different
runways. It was an interesting discussion at the
last ARC meeting to hear the commissioners
discuss these specific issues and how they can
tweak the reports to show specific impacts on
Mendota Heights. Kudos to the commissioners
for their initiative.
Tuesday Storm
The thunderstorm that rolled into Mendota
Heights on Tuesday morning turned day
into night and brought hail and heavy rain to
the city for a brief time. This was an
excellent example of the importance of
being aware of the weather conditions
around you when you are outdoors. The
wind from the storm was strong enough to
take down one of the flags that was flying
out front of city hall. The storm we
experienced on Tuesday and the heat that
we lived through this week are both good
reminders for those employees who work
outdoors of the importance of personal
safety. Please make sure this is your
priority when you are out and about in the
community. Your safety is very important to
everyone at the city.
