Construction Season Underway
There are a number of significant projects
underway around Mendota Heights—both
public and private. The Pipeline includes an
update on the reconstruction of Delaware
Avenue and Wagon Wheel Trail. In addition to
these, residents are likely happy to hear that
Sibley Memorial Highway has been re -opened
between Lexington Avenue and Downtown
Mendota. Plans for the Lilydale Tennis Club
site continue to move forward, as well as the
demolition of the existing building. On a
smaller scale, city staff have been busy
assisting residents and contractors with single
family housing projects including additions,
new homes, garages and the like.
State Government Shutdown To End
It appears that the state government shutdown
will end early next week due to the tentative
deal worked out between the Governor and
legislative leaders. Mendota Heights was not
impacted greatly during the two plus week
shutdown but we did see some issues that had
an impact on residents. We will look at these
issues and see if there is a different way to
handle them if another state government
shutdown occurs in the future. If anyone has
any issues or impacts they experienced that
they would like us to add to our list to look at
please contact the city administrator. We are
all happy the state government shutdown looks
like it will soon be over and everyone involved
in the business of state government can get
back to work.
MN River Greenway Master Plan
City staff has participated in a Dakota
County master plan process to improve
recreational opportunities along the
Minnesota River Corridor, while protecting
and enhancing the area as a natural
resource. The northern end of the greenway
starts in Mendota Heights with the Big Rivers
Regional trail. The greenway travels south
and west along the Minnesota River to the
Scott County border.
Dakota County is holding an open house
next Wednesday night, July 20, 2011 to
share the master plan and discuss how it will
be implemented. The open house is 4:30 -
6:30 p.m. at the Dakota County Western
Service Center in Apple Valley. You can
also learn more about the plan at

Good Luck Jay
All of us at the city want to wish Jay Haugen
good luck in his new position as Superintendent
of Schools for the Farmington School District
and say thank you for the positive working
relationship that we have enjoyed over the past
five years. The city-school working relationship
is an important part of any community; our
history of working together in a positive manner
has benefited all of our residents. As you leave
for your new position we thank you for the work
that you did with our children, our district, our
facilities and our future. Farmington’s gain is
Mendota Heights’ loss and we wish the school
district the best in finding their next
superintendent. Good luck Jay, stay in touch
and do not forget about the positive legacy you
have left our community. We all appreciate
your service.
2012 Budget Work Session
The City Council will hold a work session on
the 2012 budget on Tuesday, August 2,
2011 at 4:00 p.m. in the City Council
Chambers. City staff reviewed the draft
budgets submitted for each department last
week. Revisions are being made to the
draft budget that will be reviewed by the city
council in August. Additionally a “wish list”
is being developed for the council to
consider for projects and items that staff
feels are important for council to be aware
of. The 2012 budget will most likely be very
similar to the 2011 budget with levy limits
likely in place and the traditional
conservative approach used in developing
the budget. Anyone with questions on the
budget should contact the city
administrator.
