Fireworks Show Support Continues
The city will continue its annual tradition of
supporting the July 4th fireworks show that
takes place at Mendakota Country Club. The
city has partnered with Mendakota for many
years in order to make this show available for
community members. After discussing this
issue in 2010 and 2011, the city will contribute
1/3 of the cost of the show up to a maximum
of $4,000. The city is very supportive of this
event and thanks Mendakota and its members
for their support and role in making this
community event happen. Find your spot
around the club and get ready for another
great show this year. July 4th is on a Monday
this year so end the long weekend right with a
great fireworks show.
Busy Planning Commission Meeting
Next week’s planning commission meeting is
setting up to be a busy one. There are eight
new planning cases on the docket for
consideration at the June 28, 2011 meeting, as
well as one carry-over item from the May
meeting. Items for consideration on the
agenda include: three critical area permits
ranging from a patio to the removal and
replacement of a single family home.
Conditional use permits for cellular towers and
front porch entries, a wetlands permit, and the
amendment to the PUD for Mendota Plaza, as
White Pine Holdings seeks approval for a
senior assisted living facility.
It is unusual to have so many cases on one
agenda, fortunately, the planning commission
has had a couple of meetings to get to know
each other prior to next week’s busy night.
Budget Process in Full Swing
The 2012 city budget process is in full swing.
Department heads submitted their draft
budgets to the city administrator in the past
two weeks and the first draft of the 2012
budget is being developed. Preliminary looks
at the budgets show a conservative approach
to the budget to this point. City staff members
will soon go through each budget and review
for need and accuracy. The City Council will
get their first look at the draft 2012 budget at a
work session in August. Between now and
August city staff will continue to work on the
budget to what we believe is an acceptable
draft budget that will both provide quality
services to the residents and be acceptable
financially as well. Anyone with questions on
the budget should feel free to contact the city
administrator.

Thank You
A big thank you goes out to Police Chief
Aschenbrener and the Police Department for
their work in getting ready for the World Peace
and Prayer Day that took place in and around
Mendota Heights last weekend. The events
that did occur in our city were all done in a
professional manner and the preparation that
took place at the city level resulted in little to no
impacts on the residents of the city. The events
that occurred at Pilot Knob and St. Peter’s
church were attended by many and the event
was a success. Thanks again to all of those
staff members involved in this event and for the
additional work load that was added to your
already busy jobs. This goes to show how
preparing for an event and its possible
ramifications on others goes a long way
towards minimizing potential issues.
Heights Highlights
The spring/summer edition of the Heights
Highlights was mailed to residents this
week and the new version of our
community newsletter looks great. There
are a number of interesting stories and
articles in the newsletter that we hope will
be enjoyable and informative. Please pay
close attention to the article on how to help
preserve our ponds, lakes and streams in
the community. This is an important issue
that we are and will continue to spend
significant time and dollars on in Mendota
Heights. Thank you to Sandie and Jake for
the work you did in putting the newsletter
together. This is another excellent example
of the high quality communication tools we
provide to our residents. Nice work!
