Another Great Parks Celebration
Saturday was a very active day for Mendota
Heights Residents, with a record turnout at the
Mendota Heights 5K, beautiful weather for the
parks celebration, and good crowds at the
MHAA invitational baseball tournament.
The 5K, organized by Neil Garlock, made a
net profit of just over $8,000 to benefit Special
Olympics Minnesota—clearly an example of
having fun for a very good cause.
After two consecutive years of rainouts at the
Parks Celebration, 300+ residents visited
Mendakota Park to play games, listen to live
music, do crafts and visit the petting zoo.
Councilmember Ultan Duggan was a popular
person at the parks celebration, with the return
of Duggan’s Dashes.
ARC Field Trip
The Airport Relations Commission continued
their yearly education on airport related issues
by touring the FAA Air Traffic Control Center in
Farmington this week. All of the ARC
commissioners along with Councilmember
Petschel toured the center and learned how the
Farmington center plays a role in getting air
traffic to and from the Minneapolis-St. Paul
International Airport. This year’s educational
trip comes after last year’s tour of the airport’s
control tower which was very interesting. All of
the ARC members appreciated the tour this
week and it shows the continued positive
relationship that has developed between
Mendota Heights, the Metropolitan Airports
Commission and the Federal Aviation
Administration. Thank you to all of the ARC
members for attending.
Recreation Programs
The last day of school for ISD 197 students
happened this week and recreation staff are
gearing up for the start of programming next
week. Tennis, playground and golf programs
are all set, and registration has been brisk.
Teresa Gangelhoff, Katy Sanders, Joanna
Gelderman and Tom Perkins are all key staff
in providing a range of fun and safe programs
for our youth. There are still some spaces
available, check out registration on our web
page for more information.

New Staff Members
Two new staff member hiring's were approved
by the City Council this week. Terry Sullivan
will be our new Facilities Manager and Jim Lee
will be our new Fire Marshal. Terry has run his
own renovations company for almost 30 years,
resides in West St. Paul and is a graduate of
Henry Sibley High School. Jim runs his own
fire inspections company, is a retired West St.
Paul firefighter and also serves as the Fire
Marshal for the city of Little Canada. Both Terry
and Jim will start their duties in the next few
weeks. Please welcome Terry and Jim when
you meet them and welcome them to the
Mendota Heights family. Congratulations and
welcome Terry and Jim! The Human
Resources Coordinator position attracted
almost 50 applicants. Staff is currently rating all
of the applications and will conduct interviews
soon.
2012 Budget
This week department heads submitted
their 2012 draft budgets to the city
administrator. The first draft of the 2012
budget is now being put together and will
be reviewed by city staff members over the
next month. The budget process does not
stop or slow down even with the work of the
legislature and governor not complete.
There are still a number of unanswered
questions at the state level that impact our
2012 budget but the process will move
along with some assumptions being made.
Levy limits will very likely be in place again
for 2012. If you have questions on the
budget or the 2012 budget process please
contact the city administrator. Staff will
receive updates on the budget process all
year.
