Emergency Preparedness
The city council participated in a special work
session on Tuesday evening regarding
emergency preparedness. The work session
included a brief review of preparedness
concepts and a table-top exercise. Dakota
County Emergency Management conducted
the training which was intended to serve as a
primer on emergency preparedness. A major
message through the training was to
emphasize the difference between council and
staff roles in the event of a disaster.
Staff has worked hard to be prepared for a
variety of disasters which may strike our
community. It is important that our council be
prepared as well, to ensure that essential
services are uninterrupted, no matter what
challenges mother nature throws at us.
Park Celebration
We are less than a month away from our
annual park celebration, which will be held
Saturday, June 4, 2011. The main event will
be held at Mendakota Park from 10:00 a.m. to
1:00 p.m., featuring the petting zoo, bouncers,
fire truck rids, live music, youth activities and
more. The Mendota Heights 5K walk/run will
be held at 9:00 a.m. at Market Square Park,
don’t forget to pre-register if you want to
participate.
Additionally, there will be live music at Market
Square Park on Friday, June 3, and a MHAA
invitational baseball tournament all weekend
long at Mendakota Park.
Police Reserve Article
The City Council meeting this week featured
recognition for a number of volunteers being
serving in our Police Reserves program; four
new members were welcomed as well.
Recognized for the service over the last year
were Randy Pentel, Becky Pentel, Jerry
Murphy, Jesse Mettner, Andy Quinlin and
Gino Messina. All of individuals have put in
many volunteer hours to this program and the
city is extremely grateful for their service. In
addition, George Castillo, Jim Knox, Jeffrey
Parker and Jerrod Spicer were sworn in as
new reserve officers. Thank you and welcome
to the Mendota Heights family to these four
new officers and their families. In addition
thank you for the service that you have and
will provide to the citizens of Mendota Heights.
It is truly appreciated!

Rogers Lake
Members of the Saint Thomas Academy
Advanced Placement Environmental
Studies class presented their annual report
on the water quality of Rogers Lake to the
City Council this week. The overall
message from the students was that while
Rogers Lake was still a good quality lake,
the test results were down a bit from last
years report. The students talked about
actions that property owners around the
lake can do to help protect the quality of
the lake. Staff reported that the Wagon
Wheel Trail project scheduled this summer
will help control runoff directly into the lake.
The council thanked the students for their
professional presentation and for
continuing the tradition of taking these
measurements and presenting the results
to the council.
Staffing Update
City staff continues to perform work
associated with filling two staff
vacancies that exist. This week
interviews were held for the Facilities
Manager position and staff is in the
process of making a decision on that
issue. Applications are starting to
come in on the vacant Human
Resources Coordinator position as
well. This position is open until June
1, 2011 and will likely be filled by
early August of this year. Staff is
excited about the opportunity to fill
these two vacant positions and add
important members to our city staff
team.
