Mendota Heights Weekly Report on City Activities
Pilot Knob Restoration
In 2012 the City of Mendota Heights received a
$75,000 grant from the National Trust for
Historic Preservation. The grant was used to
relocate a utility line and restore vegetation on
the Pilot Knob Open Space site. As part of the
project, Great River Greening developed a
demonstration project that brings grazing
horses to Pilot Knob to assist with vegetation.

Public Works
The Parks Crew stained picnic tables throughout the parks. They attended
the fleet safety program training. Bare areas on the Kensington South
soccer fields were seeded (around the goal mouths, etc.).
The Utilities Crew sprayed for broadleaf weeds at City Hall and the Par 3.
There was a power outage at the Veronica lift station, which resulted in an
after -hours call -in. The Veronica lift station rehabilitation is complete. The
new pumps, control panel, and piping have been installed. One gfci outlet
and ballast were replaced at the Public Works Garage.
The Streets Crew replaced 25 feet of 18" storm pipe on Valley Curve that
was crushed by demo concrete and a cottonwood tree. They filled the area
around the pipe with pea gravel. Rip rap will be installed at the end of the
pipe. Black dirt and seed were put down. Yard waste, three toilets and
lawn furniture were picked up from a ditch on Centre Pointe. Hydraulic
hoses on truck 303 are being replaced.
Engineering
City Projects (construction year)
Dodd Road /Highway 110 Intersection Pedestrian Improvements (2013) -All
concrete work and landscaping is complete at the intersection, and site
cleanup is nearly complete. Mill and overlay of the intersection pavement is
scheduled for Sunday night and should be complete by 5:00am to avoid
morning rush hour impacts. Painting will take place next week attaining
substantial completion of the project.
Hunter Lane /Orchard Place Neighborhood Improvements (2013) -The
project is nearing substantial completion. Base course of pavement has
been installed on Hunter Lane and back -of -curb landscaping has begun.
Wear course pavement on the rehabilitation portions of the project is
anticipated by mid - October. Wear course pavement for Hunter Lane and
Orchard Place will be in the spring. The assessment hearing is scheduled for
the October 1St City Council Meeting. For more information, please see the

Crown Point &Overlook Neighborhood Rehabilitations (2013) -This project
is substantially complete. The contractor will be repairing the punch list
items during the remaining construction season. An assessment hearing is
scheduled for the October 15t" City Council meeting.
Sanitary Sewer Cleaning and Televising (2013) -This project is underway.
The contractor is working in the area of the city west of I -35E and north of
Highway 110. Center Pointe Business Park is also included in the project.
Minor traffic impacts should be anticipated.
Mendota Heights Road Sanitary Sewer Force Main Replacement (2013) -
The project is out for bid. Bid opening is scheduled for October 9th at
10:00am. The force main has broken 5 times in the past 6 years and is in
need of replacement. Construction could begin as early as this fall.
Highway 13 Trail Connection (2013) - A preconstruction meeting is
scheduled for Tuesday, October 1St. Notice to proceed with construction is
anticipated immediately after the preconstruction meeting, and the project
should be completed within a few weeks from the start date. Construction
is expected to begin in mid - October.
County Projects (Construction Year
North Urban Regional Trail (NURT) Realignment /Greenway Corridor -
County staff is progressing on the design of the trail realignment through
the Henry Sibley property. The County Project Manager will be giving an
update to the Parks and Recreation Commission on October 8t ", and to the
City Council on October 15t ". The City of West Saint Paul is planning on
reconstructing Marie Avenue from Delaware to Charlton in conjunction with
the NURT realignment construction in 2014.
Other Activities
Future Cities Competition -Staff is once again assisting 6t" through 8 t
grade students at Friendly Hills Middle School with their entries in the Future
Cities Competition. This competition challenges middle school students to
conceptually develop a city of the future addressing issues and needs
municipalities will face in the coming years. This year's theme is,
"Tomorrow's Transit: Design a Way to Move People In and Around Your
City," so the students will be looking at how people, materials, and products
move throughout a developed community. Last year Friendly Hills Middle
School submitted three teams; all three placed in the top ten of over 44
teams entered.

Caller reported that two kids with "fake" guns and orange hair rode into the street on
