Protecting the Mississippi River Corridor
The Mississippi River Corridor Critical Area (MRCCA) is a protected corridor comprised
of more than 72 miles of river and 54,000 acres of environmentally sensitive lands in more
than 30 local jurisdictions, including Mendota Heights.
In 2010, the City began working with the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources and
the National Park Service, to update and implement rules and ordinances governing
property situated in the MRCCA.
Property owners within the MRCCA are encouraged to contact the City prior to the design or
implementation of any construction work.
Students on Commissions
Serving as a student commissioner is a great way for high
school students to contribute to the community while gaining
valuable insight about municipal government. Two Visitation
School students are serving on Commissions for the 2022-
23 school year.
"I have enjoyed my time in the student representative
position so far. I have understood and have gotten to know
my community by learning about all the hard work that goes
into these parks. I look forward to how I can help to make
my community a better place."
-Meg Murphy, Parks and Recreation Commission
"There are a lot of ways students in our community can get
involved, and often you can be pleasantly surprised by the
enjoyment you get out of it. I personally had not ever known
much about the work that happens at City Hall, though as I
have started to be a part of it myself I have found my
experience so far to be informative and enjoyable."
-Stella Byrnes, Natural Resources Commission

Reed Grass
Invasive Common Reed grass is a non-native, highly
aggressive perennial wetland grass that quickly takes over
wet areas and outcompetes it native relative (Phragmites
Americanus).
Both species look relatively similar, but with a few distinctions. The invasive Phragmites are
much taller than the native, reaching up to 6 meters in height versus 2 meters for the native
species. The non-native also has much darker foliage.

PUBLIC WORKS
Sanitary Sewer Maintenance
Blocked sinks, overflowing toilets and flooded basements
are unpleasant emergencies and expensive problems, but
much can be done to prevent backups from happening.
The City of Mendota Heights Utilities Division regularly
maintains 80 miles of sanitary sewer lines and related
equipment. City crews clean or check about 12 miles of sanitary sewer annually, meaning
the entire system is completely maintained on a 6-year rotation. Property owners are
responsible for maintaining their sanitary sewer piping, which includes every drain and pipe
in the house, the buried pipe that carries sewage to the main line in the street, and the
connection to that main line. Therefore, all property owners should know the location of their
private sewer line (from the house to the street) and have it serviced regularly.
