PUBLIC WORKS
Sanitary Sewer Maintenance
Blocked sinks, overflowing toilets and flooded basements
are unpleasant emergencies and expensive problems, but
much can be done to prevent backups from happening.
The City of Mendota Heights Utilities Division regularly
maintains 80 miles of sanitary sewer lines and related
equipment. City crews clean or check about 12 miles of sanitary sewer annually, meaning
the entire system is completely maintained on a 6-year rotation. Property owners are
responsible for maintaining their sanitary sewer piping, which includes every drain and pipe
in the house, the buried pipe that carries sewage to the main line in the street, and the
connection to that main line. Therefore, all property owners should know the location of their
private sewer line (from the house to the street) and have it serviced regularly.
Street Sweeping
Mendota Heights streets are swept at least once each year
to protect water quality in ponds and lakes. Snowmelt and
rain water carry sand and leaves into storm sewer openings;
from there, it flows directly and untreated into City
waterways.
Sand and dirt lower lake levels, and decaying leaves and grass clippings release nutrients
that cause excess algae growth and scum.
You can help protect ponds and lakes; do not rake leaves and grass clippings onto the
streets! Fall street sweeping begins Tuesday, Nov. 1.
