Women’s Forest Congress
Visits Oȟéyawahe/Pilot
Knob Preservation Site
On Monday, Oct. 17, approximately 40 members of the
2022 Women’s Forest Congress toured the
Oȟéyawahe/Pilot Knob Preservation Site. This inaugural event aimed to bring together
diverse perspectives and collective expertise to develop strategies and solutions addressing
the most pressing current and forthcoming challenges for forests and women.
The event brought national and international visitors, including members from British
Columbia and England. Members of Dakota Tribal Nations, the Pilot Knob Preservation
Association, Task Force, City and County staff were in attendance to provide information
regarding the site’s value as a sacred site and its history, as well as the natural resources
and habitat it provides for visitors and wildlife.
There’s No Such Thing as
the Poop-Fairy!
In all seasons, remember that not picking up after your pet
is not okay. Dog feces carry bacteria, including e-coli, and sometimes parasites that can
enter and contaminate surface waters. When dog and pet feces is left behind, rain and
snow melt wash it into our streams, lakes, wetlands and rivers, either via the stormwater
conveyance system (storm drains in the street and stormwater pipes) or by overland flow.
These harmful bacteria can cause algal blooms and dangerous conditions for people, pets,
and wildlife, as well as impede activities such as swimming. City Code 5-3-3. D. also
requires pet owners to remove excrement left on any property, public or private, that is not
owned by the dog owner. In all cases however, whether on your own property or others’,
clean up after your pet as soon as possible in order to protect our surface waters.
