The playground equipment arrived at Marie Park this week, and assembly work is
underway. We're hoping to have the playground ready by the end of next week, however
due to the heat wave and for the safety of the construction team, assembly may take a bit
more time. Thank you for your patience as this is underway, and stay tuned for details on a
ribbon cutting ceremony to be announced pending completion.

NATURAL RESOURCES
What can I do to rid my pond or lake of green
algae?
Summer may have just begun, but with the recent heat wave, it definitely feels like summer
is in full-swing. With the prolonged high temperatures, you may notice your local stormwater
pond, wetland, lake, or other surface water is becoming increasingly green in color. This
green coating floating on the surface may be duckweed (a harmless, small aquatic native
plant) or it could be green algae. Algae growth increases with high temperatures and large
storm events that wash nutrients and other pollutants into our surface waters.
How can I reduce the amount of algae and pollutants in our surface waters?
Collect leaves, grass clippings, and other yard waste and dispose of them properly, or
mulch what you can into your lawn and garden. Don’t allow grass clippings, leaves,
and other yard waste to runoff into the street, storm drain, and into your pond or other
surface water.
Pick up after your pets regularly on your own property, and always pick up after them
while out on walks.
Install a raingarden, and/or redirect your downspouts off of paved surfaces and onto
gardens and landscaped areas instead, where rainwater can soak into the ground.
Create a native plant buffer along the shoreline of your stormwater pond, wetland,
lake, or stream instead of mowing to the edge. This helps keep grass clippings and
other nutrients and pollutants from washing into our surface waters.
Adopt-a-Drain! This is a quick and easy way to help improve our surface waters, and
it only takes approximately 15 minutes every two weeks. To register, visit adopt-a-
drain.org
Be on the lookout
Watch for a postcard landing in your mailbox regarding a discounted emerald ash borer
treatment program. As EAB continues to spread, it’s important to treat ash trees before it’s
too late. The citywide bulk discount provides homeowners with an affordable option
for managing their ash trees for long-term protection. Contact Rainbow Treecare for more
information at 952-767-6920.
