PARK AND RECREATION COMMISSION
MINUTES, MARCH 12, 1985
The regular meeting of the Mendota Heights Park and Recreation Commission
was called to order by Chairperson Stein at 8:00 P.M., after the farewell get-
together for Dorothy McMonigal. The following members were present: Stein,
Doffing, Knittig, Leffert, Schneeman and Singer. Also present were Terry Blum,
Kevin Frazell and Dewey Selander,
APPROVAL OF Minutes of the February 12, 1985 meeting were approved as
MINUTES submitted.
CHANGES IAI The Commission officially accepted the resignations of
COMMISSION Dorothy McMonigal, who was appointed to the Planning
MEMBERS Commission, and Mike Williams, who accepted a job in
Florida. The Commission formally welcomed Robert Leffert,
the newest member of the Commission, who replaced Dorothy
McMonigal,

GROUNDBREAKING Since so much effort has been expended on the planning and
CEREMONIES FOR construction of the Bike Trail along Lexington Avenue and
NEW BIKE TRAIL beyond, the Commission felt that a ground breaking ceremony
should be held after the design specifications have been
finalized and the bids awarded. Bob Doffing agreed to
coordinate the activities with details to be discussed at
the April meeting.
COMPENSATION City Administrator Frazell reviewed the Compensation
ANALYSIS FOR REC. Analysis for the position of City Recreation Director.
DIRECTOR After some discussion, Doffing moved that the Commission
support the recommendation that Director Selander be
retained at the present compensation level until January 1,
1986. Leffert seconded the motion and it passed
unanimously. At that time, the present program may have to
be modified, requiring a salary review.

ICE RINKS Terry Blum had a rough draft of warming house hours that
would be printed on metal signs. As agreed upon at the last
meeting, Saturday hours would be extended to start at 10:00
A.M., instead of 12 noon. Sunday hours would remain at noon
to 6:00 P.M. Christmas and school vacation days were
extended to also start at 10:00 A.M., instead of 12 noon.
The warming houses will remain closed on December 25 and
January 1, unless numerous objections are made by the
public. The warming houses are being painted with two tone
interior paint to reduce marring. Dewey was commended for
his supervision of ice rink attendants.
BIKE TRAIL UPDATE The Commission requested that Public Works Director
Danielson prepare an update on the Bike Trail status for the
April meeting.
SPRING RECREATION
Recreation Director Selander reviewed the upcoming spring
PROGRAM
recreation programs for the Commission. Advertisements for
T-ball, Art in the Park, tennis lessons, women's tennis and
men's softball have gone out to the various media. Doffing
recommended that a statement explaining that Mend -Eagan
programs are available be included in subsequent
advertisements. Interested people can then contact the
appropriate Mend -Eagan officers.
PARK SURVEY
Since the Hi-lites did not get mailed until a short time
before the meeting, there were no survey results.
MISCELLANEOUS
Although the Commission will wait until survey results are
in, discussions about the status of the volleyball and
basketball courts will be discussed at the April meeting.
Park Clean-up will also be discussed then.
Further discussion about a patriotic holiday celebration
over the 4th of July will be discussed at the April meeting.
Doffing will attend the next meeting of the City Council on
March 19, with Knitting slated to attend the next two
meetings.
ADJOURN There being no further business to come before the
Commission, the meeting was adjourned.
