PARK and RECREATION COMMISSION
MINUTES, October 27, 1977

1 . Minutes of the September 29 meeting were approved as mailed.
2. Lionel Greenburg appeared on behalf of the Mendota Heights Cross -Country Ski Club
and presented the forms that need to be completed to obtain a $1,000 grant for im-
provement of the ski trails. The motion was made by Howe and seconded to make
application for a $1,000 grant to the Department of Natural Resources for this purpose.
Motion passed.
3. Babe Ruth Baseball Fields. Discussion was had regprding the problem of not having
Babe Ruth size ball parks for the summer baseball and softball programs. Possibilities
include leasing land and revamping of the ballfields at Mendota School. Liz Witt
will do some further checking into this and report back at the next meeting.
4. Park
Survey. Mills

he did not make a report on the park survey but will
do so
at the next
meeting.
5. Recreational Volleyball. Dewey reported through Liz Witt that the men's volleyball
program is going reasonably well and that the women program is excel lent. There
was little or no interest in the couple's volleyball program and it has been dropped.
b. Park Landscaping.
Rudy reported
that the Friendly Hills
Park Landscaping is completed
and work is being
done on Ivy Falls
and Wentworth Park.
The City has obtained ap-
proximately 140 three-inch trees,
twenty-five of which will be placed in various parks.
7. County Trails Plan. Liz has received a letter from Dakota County regarding the county
trails which would interconnect with our trail system. The intent of the letter was to
say to keep working on our own trails which will eventually link up to a county and
statewide trail system.
8. Comprehensive Plan. Liz reported that the City Council has agreed to proceed with a
new comprehensive plan and our input will be required during this process.

9. Trail Applications. Liz reported that three LAWCON grant applications have
been submitted by the City for trail improvement, trail construction, and park
improvements.
10. Soccer Program. Howe moved to commend Rudy for his quick and good work in
setting up the soccer fields for the Mend -Egan Soccer Program being run this fall.
Goals were constructed and fields lined and over 270 kids came out for soccer this
year. Motion seconded and passed. I also reported that contrary to expectations,
the football program did not suffer as a result of the soccer program.
11. Playground Equipment. Gustafson reported that the playground equipment in Wentworth
Park was nearly completed as a result of two Saturdays' of work by the Mendota Heights
Jaycees. Rudy indicated that they may have to put in some the to drain the play-
ground area as when they drove the holes for the equipment it was found that the
water table was very high.
There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned.
