PARK and RECREATION COMMISSION
MINUTES, May25,1977
Members Present: Lundeen, Gustafson, Witt, Mills
Members Absent: Murphy, Howe, Finn
Minutes of the April 27th meeting were approved as mailed.
2. Chairman Witt reported that at a meeting the prior week, several members of
the Commission along with the Jaycees and Harvey Franzmeier had selected the
specific locations for the playground equipment to be erected in Wentworth and
Friendly Hills Parks,
3. Witt reported that a condition of Rogers Lake was very poor and it was questionable
whether it could be cleaned up and used as a swimming beach this year. (AlI the
members that were at the commission meeting later that evening inspected Rogers
Lake and found it in very poor condition. It was agreed that if it looked as if
there was any possibility that the beach could be used, we would secure a life guard.)
4. Dodd Road Pedway -- The work being done along Dodd Road to widen and improve
the shoulders will apparently not affect our application for federal funding for a
pedway to be constructed along Dodd Road.
5. Recreation -- It was again brought to the Commission's attention that additional
help will probably be needed for the recreation program if we are to continue at
the present level of activity. Various suggestions have been made from time to
time including an allocation of time to the program of existing staff in the City
offices. Most of the problem is in organizing and registering for the various
programs. This has been difficult for Dewey to accomplish from his home.
6. Recruitment of Commission members -- In the past, it has not been readily apparent
to the citizens of the community when openings existed on the Park &Recreation
Commission. Various people have inquired of Commission members as to how they
might get involved. Several suggestions were made including publishing notice of
openings in the Sun Newspaper and to notify community organizations when openings
on the Commission exist.
7. Comprehensive Plan
--Witt
reported
that in a couple of years the City will be updating
their comprehensive
plan.
Thus, the
Park &Recreation Commission should, in the next
few months, think ahead
to
what they
might want incorporated in the comprehensive
plan, including our
existing
study on
the trails throughout the City.

There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned to inspect Rogers Lake. It was
decided there would be no June meeting of the Commission insofar as many of the members
were going to be out of town.

Gary C. Gustafson
