CITIZENS PARKS REVIEW COMMITTEE
MEETING OF THE BALLFIELDS SUBCOMMITTEE
MINUTES FEBRUARY 6, 1989
Present: Jeff Stenhaug, Jim Kilburg, Jim Losleban, Liz Witt
Jann Blesener, Mike Kluznik, City Administrator Kevin
Frazell, Public Works Director Jim Danielson and Parks
Consultant Barry Warner. New group member: Dick Spicer
representing Mend -Eagan Baseball.
The Committee reviewed the minutes from the meeting of
January 3 to determine whether they accurately reflected the
number of fields needed in the community. The following
changes and conclusions were adopted:
SOCCER
No changes were made in the previous recommendation.
SOFTBALL
Under the "coaches pitch" category for second and third
Vraders, the number of potential teams in three years was
increased from 12-14 to 16-18. Doubling the number of plays
per week to account for practice yields 180 plays per week;
at eight plays per field this necessitates 22 fields. The
previous minutes had noted that there are 13 fields available
in the community, leaving a need for nine additional.
Therefore, the previous recommendation to add no new youth
fields was changed to "add seven new youth fields and upgrade
existing fields.
FULL SIZE SOFTBALL FIELDS
Several of the projections for future number of teams were
reduced:
Women's fastpitch reduced from 12 to 8
Men's fastpitch reduced from 12 to 8
Mixed kittenball reduced from 12 to 10
There was also some discussion of the need to address a
potential "industrial league", although there was not
concensus among the committee as to how this should be
addressed in promoting the current referendum.
The revised figures yielded a new total plays per week of 90
anA it was noted that adult teams usually only play once per
week and have little, if any, practice. The 90 teams would
play 45 games. It was further determined that only ten games
per week can be played on a field, yielding the need for
4 1/2 (5)
fields. With
one
available by upgrading of the
existing
City Hall site,
the
recommendation was to changed to
include
the addition of
four
new fields, and acquire land to
add two
in future years
(or
light the existing fields, which
results
in more games being
able to be played per field).
BASEBALL
There was discussion of the boys' traveling teams for 121 13,
14 and 15 year olds. There are four teams, and there is
potential for doubling or eight teams in three years. Each
team has one play and two practices per week in the city,
resulting in a total of 24 plays.
With scheduling, it was determined that five games per week
could be played on each field, so the ultimate need is for
five plus fields.
The committee recommendation is to use the three fields now
available in the community, (two at Sibley, one at
St. Thomas) and add two more immediately. Allow for the
future addition of two more baseball fields or light the two
added fields to extend play time.
FOOTBALLFIELD HOCKEY
There was no change in the recommendations concerning
football or field hockey.
The committee agreed to meet again in two weeks on Monday,
February 20 at 7:00 p.m. to look at the an sites available
in the community.
Meeting was adjourned at approximately 8:00 p.m.
