Fire prevention information
delivered curbside
As part of Fire Prevention Week this year, firefighters
served up safety information to the community last Saturday
by offering a drive-thru experience. Attendees were able to
learn about fire safety, check out fire trucks and equipment
from their vehicles, and receive safety packets "to go."
Junior firefighter Snuffer even made an appearance, fully
masked, to greet and distance mingle.

RECYCLING
November 7 & 8
Mendota Heights City Hall Parking Lot
Bring pumpkins to City Hall's parking lot and toss them into the giant dumpster for free. No
painted pumpkins, wax, or candles will be accepted. For questions contact Cassandra

Food storage tip
Did you know potatoes and onions, like vampires, prefer cool, dark
places? Store these items under a cupboard or in a dark closet, but
keep them separated. Storing them together will actually
encourage them to sprout and spoil faster. Don’t make that spooky
mistake! For more storage tips visit Eureka Recycling’s page.
Reduce food waste and learn cooking tips from the
pros
The Northeast Recycling Council and Northeast Waste Management Officials Association
are offering a free webinar on November 10, from 1 to 2:30 p.m. The virtual ReCook Cafe
will feature a mix of live and recorded cooking demonstrations of four professional chefs
who will be sharing their favorite tips, tricks, techniques, and more to help home cooks get
the most out of their food and reducing waste while creating delicious dishes. Learn best
practices for maximizing the shelf-life of perishable produce, using parts of foods you didn't
know were so tasty, compiling odds and ends to create new tasty eats, and so much more.

NATURAL RESOURCES
Valley Park Eagle Scout tree planting project
You may notice some new additions to Valley Park this fall. A Mendota Heights resident,
Wyatt Cook, completed his Eagle Scout Service project by planting 12 new, native trees
throughout Valley Park. The event took place over several weekends, as scouts and
volunteers removed invasive species and prepared sites for planting. It concluded on
Saturday, October 3, with the tree planting around the ball field and along the pedestrian
trail in North Valley Park.
The project will help replace canopy loss due to Emerald Ash Borer and brings the many
benefits to Valley Park that trees provide, including:
Shade and reducing the heat island affect
Treating and reducing stormwater runoff
Reducing erosion
Food and habitat for wildlife
Cleaner air
For additional information, please contact Krista Spreiter, Natural Resources
Technician, kristas@mendota-heights.com or 651-255-1123.

Park. Over 50 volunteers from Mendota Heights and surrounding communities worked to

Greening. This volunteer event was part of a larger city project and partnership with Great
River Greening to remove woody invasive species in Copperfield Ponds Park and restore
the area with native vegetation. To view more photos from the event visit Great River
