Update on City Events & Summer Programs
In response to COVID-19 and in order to keep residents and staff safe, at its April 21
meeting the City Council announced a policy related to City-sponsored events and
recreation. Unless otherwise specified, all city events and recreation programs are
cancelled until July 6. This includes summer recreation programs (field trips, camps,
classes, leagues), the June Concert Series at Mendakota Park, and the annual Parks
Celebration and July 4 fireworks display.
The Officer Scott Patrick Memorial 5K Walk/Run for Minnesota Special Olympics has been
rescheduled for July 11.
The City has received several inquiries into use of recreational fields for this summer. At this
point, the City is not accepting any field reservations. Pending any announcements by
Governor Walz that would modify the ability to safely offer youth or adult sports leagues, it
will take 2 weeks from that point to properly prepare fields for use.

Celebrate Earth and Arbor Day while staying safe at
home
April 22 marked the 50th anniversary of Earth Day, and today is Arbor Day! The City’s Earth
and Arbor Day event has been cancelled, as many celebrations and events surrounding
these days have. However, there are still plenty of things you can do to celebrate, while
staying home and maintaining social distancing. Here are a few ideas:
Take the entire family on a walk around your neighborhood or favorite park, picking
up trash and recyclables along the way. Pick a location near or around water bodies
for an extra bonus!
Plant a native garden filled with native plants and flowers. Pick pollinator-favorites
such as asters, coneflower, and milkweed species. You can even apply for a Lawns
to Legumes grant to help pay for the cost of installation. Visit
https://bwsr.state.mn.us/l2l for more information. Apply by June 2.
Adopt a Drain! Adopt-a-Drain is an easy and simple program to become a part of,
and it only requires 15 minutes, twice a month, to help keep trash, sediment, leaves
and other pollutants out of our surface waters. For more information, visit:
https://adopt-a-drain.org/
Make native ‘seed bombs’ using soil and native plant and wildflower seeds. Then
plant them in your yard. This is a great project for kids, and you can order kits online
or DIY.

And of course, plant a tree! Remember to pick the right tree for the right place,
considering light and moisture needs, and follow proper tree planting guidelines:

Landscaping for Clean Water
Workshops go virtual
Dakota County Soil & Water Conservation District’s
Landscaping for Clean Water program has made the
decision to cancel all in-person classes in 2020 due to
Covid-19. Instead, all programming will be offered using
pre-recorded presentations, using Google Drive. SWCD
staff will still be available via phone and email to answer any
questions participants may have. Design workshop
participants will also have the option to sign up for a one-on-one virtual garden consultation
with SWCD staff via Zoom.
