Minutes - Miendota Heights Park and Recreation Board - May 23, 1978
Members present - Witt,Literski,Williams, Mills,Lundeen, Murphy
Members absent; Finn & Gustafson
1. Chairman Witt called the meeting to order at 8:05 p.m. The
minutes were approved as mailed.
2. Witt reported that Ed Kischel will not be able to give us a
report on Valley Park crossings until our June meeting. Rudy,
Harvey and Ory met with Ed and decided that plans for the northerly
crossing can be scaled down. Rudy said that the middle crossing
will be left as is, with gravel added on the top.
3. Summer recreation - Dewey was not present to give a report but
called in later. IIe said the sign-up for t -ball was super as it
was for soccer. He will field 8 girls soccer teams and has 65 boys
set for teams. Soccer cannot be played at Sibley this year as the
field is being torn up and resodded. Play will p2ably be held at
Friendly Hills or Ivy Falls Park fields. Dewey says he needs more
girls to coach the t -ball teams.
4. The council decided to take no fr.uther action on a Marie Ave.
bikeway at this point. They felt that Dodd Road was to be the
primary route through the city and we should check with the MnDOT
to see if anything will be happening in the near future with Dodd Rd.
5. The Council approved the inclusion of a bikeway on the unnamed
strret from Delaware to Friendly Hills. Ory Johnson said that we
could not raise the level of Marie Ave. holding Pond until the new
developments in the area are completed with their own holding ponds.
The Marie Pond is the drainage pond for much of the area at this time.
6. Chairman I;Titt reported that she would join Bill Kleineck, W.ST.Paul
Parks director; Barb Schmidt, Eagan Park Director; Bob Zevnick, District
#197 Athletic Director; Tom Lisec and Tom Hall, Community Education
Services Director and Programmer, on Thursday,May 25, to discuss the
feasibility of lights and a bubble over the tennis courts at Sibley.
She will keep the Park commission informed of progress.
7. The information file on playground equipment was not available for
the May meeting so we did not make any decisions. Mary Mills did report
that W. St. Paul is in the process of installing a Vita exercise course
from Marthaler to Garlough park and such a course in Mendota Heights would
just be a duplication. The commission agreed with her assessment and will
not provide a Vita course. We agreed to take a field trip of several
areas, Tuesday, June 13 at 6:30 p.m. at Ivy Falls Park. We will check Ivy
Falls, Marie and Valley Parks for playground equipment locations. We
will also go to Rogers Lake and Wentworth Parks. Preliminary to the field
trip Ory Johnson will be consulted as to the status of a trail connection
from Wentworth Park to 4th Ave.
8. Rudy says he has had a couple of estimates for blacktop from the tennis
courts to the parking lot at Rogers Lake; and from the Wentworth courts
across the bridge to the playground area. He will check with Jerry Murphy
for ideas he might have re: these walkway areas. No further action was
taken .
9. The meeting was adjourned at 8:55.
Respectfully submitted,
Liz Witt for Gary Gustafson
