MINUTES -- MENDOTA HEIGHTS PARK & RECREATION BOARD
June 27, 1978
Present: Witt, Literski, Williams, Lundeen, Finn, Gustafson
Absent: Murphy, Mills
Minutes of the May 23 meeting were approved as mailed.
2. Summer Recreation: Witt reported that no CETA people came through for
job openings as coaches for the T -ball program. Thus, these had to be hired
at the last minute. Rudy has two CETA people helping him for the summer.
It is also reported that the field at Visitation needs grading and it was hoped
we could find someone to do it on a gratis basis.
3. Valley Park: Discussion continued on the Valley Park trail and the various
proposals that we have received on bridges and pedestrian bridges to be con-
structed to improve the trail system and make it usable and maintainable.
Plans prepared by Ed Kishel, consulting engineer, were reviewed as well as
his cost estimates to complete the necessary work. A motion was made and
seconded and passed to recommend to the City Council that a pedestrian crossing
and 8' wide steel bridge be constructed in Valley Park subject to final plans and
specifications prepared by Kishel, with the total cost of the project not to exceed
$20,000.
(The Commission is concerned that undue destruction in the construction of these
bridges not take place. If the cost of this project on a bid basis exceeds $20,000
the Commission would like to re-evaluate your recommendation.)
4. Budget: Witt presented copies of this year's budget and analysis of Eagan and West
St. Paul programs for the Commission's perusal prior to the budget meeting next
month.
5. Playground Equipment: A sub -committee of Mills, Witt and Lundeen were
appointed to study the various types of playground equipment and present plans
for the other three parks at the next meeting. At this late stage, we have not
received a commitment from any organization for the construction of the playground
equipment and therefore will probably only try to complete one park this summer
with the other two carrying over to next year.
b. Blacktop Paths: The motion was made, seconded and passed that the Commission
recommend to the City Council that blacktop paths be installed subject to recommenda-
tions by engineer Kishel with cost not to exceed $5,000 in the following parks:
Valley Park - approx. 35' from parking lot to tennis court
Rogers Lake - tennis court to parking lot and parking lot to pavilion
Wentworth Park - parking lot near tennis courts through park across bridges to
other parking lot near playground
Minutes — page two
7. Some discussion was carried on regarding lighting and the possibility of an
independent contractor putting bubbles over the Sibley tennis courts. No
action was taken at this time.
There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned.
Respectfully submitted,
Gary Gustafson,
Secretary
I
