Adopting a storm drain simply involves keeping it free of sediment,
trash, leaves, and other debris by sweeping and collecting it at least
twice a month. Please use caution and follow the safety procedures on
the Adopt-a-Drain website. You can even track how much you are
collecting using the website. It is a simple, easy way you can help do
your part to improve water quality in our community! Online sign-up

From 1956—this site was once considered for the Mendota Heights water tower (as drawn in)
overlooking Friendly Hills and Copperfield.
Low Waste Road Trip
If you are traveling or taking a road trip this summer, there are
a few things you can do to create less trash over your vacation
and make it more eco-friendly.
Top up your tires: Check tire pressures to ensure they
are at the correct pressure. Your car will be more gas-
efficient which will save you money.
Snacks: Bring a cooler and stock up on water and
beverages to curtail buying from gas
stations. Choose snacks that do not
require refrigeration and that will last a
few days, and buy without packaging as
much as possible. Try items such as
bananas, apples, peanut butter, jelly,
hummus, veggie sticks, nuts, and beef
jerky.
Toiletries: Did you know the free shampoo and
conditioner bottles given out by hotels
are usually too small to be captured by
sorting machines at recycling facilities,
therefore ending up as trash? Take along
some bar soap and your own toiletries
or reusable travel-sized containers filled
with your own products. You can buy these in the travel
section of most stores for a couple of dollars, and can use
them for years to come.
Main meals: If possible, stop for a real meal in a
restaurant that uses real flatware versus going through a
drive thru. Fast food creates a lot of unnecessary waste
that is avoidable. Another great option is grabbing food at
a gas station hot bar like hot dogs or soup, where you
could bring your own container to fill. Of course you can
always make sandwiches and stock up your cooler before
hand.
Safe travels!

While there are no laws in Minnesota governing a specific age a child must be
before he or she may be left home alone, there are general laws that county
child protectfon offices are required to enforce.
Under the age of 8 are never left alone for any period of tfme.
Ages 8-10 may be left alone for less than three hours.
Ages 11-13 may be left alone for less than 12 hours.
Ages 14-15 may be left alone for less than 24 hours.
Ages 16-17 may be left alone for longer if there is a plan in place about how
to respond to an emergency.
Parents are back to work.
Who’s watching the kids?
When can children babysit other children?
Children under age 11 should not provide child care to other children.
For children age 11 and older who are providing child care, the same limits
apply to them based on their age as described above.
Other Factors to Consider:
A child’s age, mental ability and maturity level
Accessibility of the parent, guardian or designated caretaker to a child by
phone and/or in person
The presence of intellectual deficits, psychological issues, mental health
concerns, and/or physical problems like illness or disabilitfes
Behavioral history of a child
A child’s age if using the kitchen stove, an iron or other appliance
Fire safety
Any unusual hazards in the home that reasonably cause extra risk,
including unsecured/accessible firearms and ammunitfon
Bottom line, use common sense in all situatfons. If you have any questfons,
please contact the Dakota County Social Services, Children and Family Intake at
952.891.7459 or visit https://www.co.dakota.mn.us/HealthFamily/Parentfng/
