July 30, 2014, 12:20 p.m.….
On Monday, a memorial will now stand to honor Officer Scott Patrick,
#2231, whose life as a father, husband, family member, friend and
public servant was abruptly ended. Unfortunately, tragedies such as
his are not isolated, and are feeling far more frequent.
If you take the time to view the Officer Down Memorial Page, you can
see the variety of reasons officers have fallen within the profession. We
all know that life is a gift, but for a police officer, that statement means
more. It means more to those who have been helped in a terrifying or
traumatic situation and given another day to live again. So far this
year, the ODMP reports 89 total line of duty deaths.
TOTAL LINE OF DUTY DEATHS: 89
9/11 related illness 8
Assault 2
Automobile crash 18
Drowned 1
Duty related illness 3
Gunfire 35
Gunfire (Accidental) 1
Heart attack 9
Struck by vehicle 3
Vehicle pursuit 4
Vehicular assault 5
We remember Scott and his family especially at this time of year. We
honor the families who have lost a loved one and we remain grateful for
all who choose to protect and serve. Thank you for your service.
