Learn How to Identify Invasive Plants
Invasive Plants have become quite a problem throughout the United States. In order to
help reduce those invasive species in our city, residents are invited to learn more
by attending a free workshop about the invasive plants that we have in Mendota
Heights. Master Gardeners will show you how to identify, remove, and find
alternatives to invasive plants at the workshop.

Nominate A Volunteer
2nd Annual Garold ‘Jerry’ Murphy Community Service Award
The City of Mendota Heights is accepting nominations for
the 2nd Annual Garold M. “Jerry” Murphy Community
Service Award. Jerry started his volunteer service to the
community on an August evening in 1967 when he as-
sisted at a neighbor’s house fire. From that day on, Jerry
made himself available to the police department on a
moment’s notice. He had a gift for making those in his
presence feel comfortable and included.
Ted Kronschnabel was our first recipient of the award in
2016.
Please take the time to think about those in your life who selflessly volunteer
their time to make our community a better place to live. We are looking for
nominations to recognize the wonderful ambassadors to the City of Mendota
Heights and the 2nd Annual Community Service Award winner who will uphold
Jerry’s legacy.
Please consider nominating someone who volunteers, has a can-do spirit, is a
good role model, exudes compassion, has a positive attitude, and is well re-
spected.
Nomination forms are on the City’s website or available at City Hall and are due
by March 16, 2018. The recipient will be recognized at the April 17th City Coun-
cil meeting.

ROSEVILLE, Minn. – The public is invited to learn about upcoming landscaping work along Highway 149 between St. Paul
and Mendota Heights at an open house scheduled for Feb. 15.
The event will be held from 6 – 8 p.m. at Somerset Elementary School, 1355 Dodd Rd. in Mendota Heights, Minn. There will
be a formal presentation at 6:30 p.m.
The landscaping and replanting project includes replacing 115 boulevard trees along Smith Avenue and Dodd Road—also

Transportation and project staff will be on hand to answer questions.
The replanting project is part of a larger construction effort on Highway 149 that includes:

We have sure had our fair share of snow this winter, and its not
over yet! While shoveling snow can be good exercise, it can also
be deadly for optimistic shovelers who take on more than they
can handle. The Minnesota Safety Council offers the following
tips to help you get a handle on safe shoveling.
• Individuals over the age of 40, or those who are relatively inactive,
should be especially careful. If you have a history of heart trouble, check
with your doctor before shoveling.
• Avoid shoveling after eating or while smoking.
• Take it easy. Snow shoveling is a weight-lifting exercise that raises
your heart rate and blood pressure. Warm up before starting the job and
stretch both before and after shoveling.
• If possible, shovel only fresh snow — it is easier to shovel than wet,
packed-down snow.
• Push the snow forward rather than lifting it out of the way; pick up
only small amounts when needed. Your back will thank you.
• As with any lifting activity, use your legs, not your back. Legs should
be bent and back straight. Bend and "sit" into the movement, allowing
large muscle groups to do most of the work.
• Never work to the point of exhaustion. Take frequent breaks. If your
chest feels tight, stop immediately.
• Dress as you would for any outdoor activity. Dressing in layers is best.
Take extra precautions to keep hands and feet warm.
