MARCH 2, 2018
ParenƟng tweens & teens in a world that encourages more space and privacy is so
difficult! We know teens need to experience new things in order to make mistakes
and learn to handle conflict, but parents need to set boundaries, ensure their kids
are safe, and help build their moral compass. Social media & technology has many
benefits, but it can also blur the lines of morality and ethics.
Will you know when your child has begun to stray down the immoral and possibly
criminal path of bullying, abuse and drugs? Social media isn’t just a plaƞorm to be
social and connected; it is also a tool for more dangerous acƟvity, like buying and
selling drugs, pornographic use of media messages and other criminal acƟvity. Are
you watching for signs that your child is straying down a dangerous, spiraling path?
Consider the following:
New Clothing, Electronics or Gadgets ‐ Did they buy it legiƟmately? Are you
seeing receipts and knowing where they purchased it from? Are their an‐
swers ambiguous or vague? If the answers are no, then further research may
be in order.
Excessive or Suspicious Phone Use: Maybe they receive too many late
night texts, their responses are agitated, angry or followed by other suspi‐
cious behaviors. Your house, your rules, your right to invesƟgate and know
any acƟvity that could be a danger to them or members of your household.
Changes in Friendships: Has your child changed to a different group of
friends? Have you goƩen to know them? Or have they let friendships slide
and are increasingly isolated and alone?
Unexcused Absences: Has your child been leaving school or the house at
odd hours? Do they seem to be lying and if you so, do you corroborate their
story? Are they under the influence of drugs or alcohol? Are you sure?
