2017-07-11 Parks and Rec Comm Minutes CITY OF MENDOTA HEIGHTS DAKOTA COUNTY, MINNESOTA PARKS AND RECREATION MEETING Tuesday July 11, 2017 The March meeting of the Mendota Heights Parks and Recreation Commission was held on Tuesday, June 13, 2017 at Mendota Heights City Hall, 1101 Victoria Curve. Chair Hinderscheid called to order the parks and recreation commission meeting at 6:30 p.m. The following commissioners were present: Chair Hinderscheid, Commissioners: Ira Kipp, Steve Goldade, Bob Klepperich, Mike Toth, David Miller and Stephanie Levine. Staff present: Recreation Programmer Sloan Wallgren. Approval of Agenda Chair Hinderscheid add two items to the agenda; Emerald Ash Borer Update and the Activity Log. COMMISSIONER LEVINE MADE A MOTION TO APPROVE THE AGENDA; COMMISSIONER MILLER SECONDED THE MOTION. AYES 6: NAYS 0 Approval of Minutes from June 13, 2017 COMMISSIONER MILLER MADE A MOTION TO APPROVE THE MINUTES FROM THE MARCH 14, 2017 PARKS AND RECREATION COMMISSION MEETING; COMMISSIONER KLEPPERICH SECONDED THE MOTION. AYES 6: NAYS 0 Announcements Mr. Wallgren announced that the Cliff Timm Fishing Derby is being held on Thursday, July 27. He also announced that the Mendota Heights Athletic Association will begin taking registration for fall volleyball, football and soccer soon. Recreation Program Update Mr. Wallgren updated the commission on the upcoming events that are still taking place in Mendota Heights this summer. Safety Camp is currently being held at Kaposia Park, the adult nd softball tournament will be held July 22 at Mendakota Park and there is still live music at the nd Village every Wednesday night ending August 22. Par 3 Report Mr. Wallgren presented the commission with the June report of the golf course. He mentioned th that the month of June with all of the golf leagues and golf camps taking place. On July 7 the course hosted a Junior PGA event of 60 youth. The maintenance of the golf course is going well, staff receives complements daily about how nice the course looks. MH Parks and Recreation Commission 7-11-2017 Page 1 2018 CIP Mr. Wallgren led a discussion on the 2018 Parks CIP. The Special Parks Fund currently has a balance of roughly $650,000. Projects the commission would like to see complete are adding new lights to the hockey rinks at Wentworth Park and Friendly Hills Park. Also the commission would like to see the tennis courts at Marie Park, Wentworth Park and Friendly Hills Park improved. Finally, the commission would like to see improvements made to the playgrounds at the park, the commission agreed upon recommending to spend $50,000 each year on playground equipment improvements. Emerald Ash Borer Mr. Wallgren informed the commission that there is a studying being conducting on the Emerald Ash Borer in Mendota Heights. As part of the study, some ash trees are being treated in the city to see if the study could benefit other communities. Commission Comments Commissioner Toth thought we had a good discussion tonight. He encouraged residents to slow down in town with all of the road construction. Commissioner Kipp thought it was a good meeting and would like to see a separate commission set up to look at Natural Resources Commissioner Goldade thought it was a good meeting and encouraged people to use the parks and let the commissioners know if there is anything that residents in the city would like to see. Commissioner Levine appreciated everyone’s input and was glad to see the commission developing a plan to enhance our parks. Commissioner Miller thought that the commission discussed lots of important issues tonight. Commissioner Klepperich thanked MHAA for providing quality programs for youth in the community to participate in. Chair Hinderscheid thanked MHAA and staff for all that they do. COMMISSIONER GOLDADE MADE A MOTION TO ADJURN THE MEETING. COMMISSIONER TOTH SECONDED THE MOTION.
