SERIAL NUMBERS
When thieves steal valuable items from your unlocked (or locked vehicle
or home), not only do you lose your sense of security, but you may also
lose very valuable property. It's critical to record the serial numbers of
your possessions. When you become a victim of theft or burglary, being
able to quickly provide this information is law enforcement’s best chance
at apprehending the crook and recovering your valuables. Being able to
provide a serial number, or an engraved unique number, to law
enforcement increases the chances of the criminal being prosecuted.
Serial numbers are unique numbers often placed on items by the
manufacturer. If an item doesn't have a serial number, you may create
one and engrave it on the item (i.e. your state issued driver's license or
identification number). It only takes a few minutes to record the
description, serial number and value of items that are most likely to be
stolen. When you purchase a new phone, bicycle or lawn equipment,
snap a photo of the serial number and record the serial number
separately. If you have valuable or heirloom jewelry, take pictures of
each piece and note special markings, features or blemishes. If these
items are insured, your insurance company will retain photos and
special identifying information. Store all data and other important paper-
work separately in a fireproof and waterproof location. Don’t forget to
include items such as pool equipment, televisions, and specialty tools or
motors.
Thefts are often Crimes of Opportunity – take time to remove the
opportunity. Keep all property, especially vehicles and home entrances,
locked and secured, with valuables
removed or out of sight. Lawn equipment
and tools should be secured in a locked
storage building. Guns should always be
locked in a gun safe and records should be
kept current. Attached is an inventory form
that will help you get started with tracking
your valuables. Take the time now to
complete this so that if you become a
victim, you are prepared.
