Help Name the New Pedestrian Tunnel Under Highway 110
At 11:30 a.m. on October 27th, the grand
opening of this walkway between the Men-
dota Plaza development on the south, and
The Village at Mendota Heights on the
north side of TH 110, will take place. This
will provide a safe and convenient connec-
tion for walkers, runners, and cyclists be-
tween these two focal points in Mendota
Heights, and will also connect more of the
regional Dakota County Greenway Trail
system. The tunnel is courtesy of Dakota
County.
But it needs a name! The Mendota Heights
City Council is asking for your help in sug-
gesting a fun and creative label for the tun-
nel—one that can be referred to informally by our community to identify this important
connector. Please—no names that are memorial, political, or “in honor of…”
A panel of judges will determine the winner, whose name will be announced at the grand
opening ceremony. The winner will receive two restaurant gift certificates totaling $100,
plus four rounds of golf or foot golf at the Mendota Heights Par 3 golf course.
Entries must be received at City Hall by 4:30 PM Monday, October 23rd. They may be sub-
mitted in writing to: Name the Tunnel Contest

Fall has arrived, peak season for deer vs vehicle crashes. Minnesota has a large

accounted for 14 of the 15 deer vs. vehicle death related crashes from 2013-2015.

MOTORIST SAFETY TIPS
Drive at safe speeds and always be buckled up.
Be especially cautious from 6 to 9pm, when deer are most active.
Use high beams as much as possible at night, especially in deer-active areas.
Don’t count on deer whistles or deer fences to deter deer from crossing roads.
Watch for the reflection of deer eyes and deer silhouettes on the shoulder.
Slow down in areas where roads divides agricultural fields from forest land.
Deer do unpredictable things. If the deer stays on the road, don ’t try to go
around it.
Motorcyclists: Avoid night and low light riding periods. Use both brakes and
keep your eyes and head up for best chances of keeping the bike up.
Wear high visibility gear and full head protection to prevent injury or death.
If a deer is struck but not killed by a vehicle, keep a distance as they may
recover and move on. If the deer does not move or poses a public safety risk,
report the incident to DNR or other local law enforcement agency.
Any MN resident may claim a road-killed animal by contacting law
enforcement. An authorization permit will be issued allowing the individual to
lawfully possess the deer.
NEVER VEER FOR DEER!
Swerving can take a motorist into oncoming traffic or off the road.
