Minnesota has a large deer population making them a safety hazard on the roadways. Motorcyclists are accounted for 14 of the 15 deer vs. vehicle death related crashes from 2013-2015. YEAR ALL CRASHES ALL FATALITIES MOTORCYCLE DEATHS ALL SERIOUS INJURIES MOTORCYCLE INURIES 2013 2,096 8 7 15 13 2014 1,912 1 1 14 14 2015 2,141 6 6 25 24 2013-2015 6,149 15 14 54 51 MOTORIST SAFETY TIPS  Drive at safe speeds and always be buckled up.  Be especially cautious from 6 to 9pm, when deer are most active.  Use high beams as much as possible at night, especially in deer-active areas.  Don’t count on deer whistles or deer fences to deter deer from crossing roads.  Watch for the reflection of deer eyes and deer silhouettes on the shoulder.  Slow down in areas where roads divides agricultural fields from forest land.  Deer do unpredictable things. If the deer stays on the road, don’t try to go around it.  Motorcyclists: Avoid night and low light riding periods. Use both brakes and keep your eyes and head up for best chances of keeping the bike up. Wear high visibility gear and full head protection to prevent injury or death.  If a deer is struck but not killed by a vehicle, keep a distance as they may recover and move on. If the deer does not move or poses a public safety risk, report the incident to DNR or other local law enforcement agency.  Any MN resident may claim a road-killed animal by contacting law enforcement. An authorization permit will be issued allowing the individual to lawfully possess the deer. NEVER VEER FOR DEER! Swerving can take a motorist into oncoming traffic or off the road. 2 NEGLECT — 4XX Mendota Rd W 9/23/2017, 0938 HOURS Officers met with two residents to discuss concerns that their elderly mother was not receiving the care she needed from another family member. Officers performed a welfare check on the female and found her care to appear satisfactory. DRUGS — 2XXX Dodd Rd 9/23/2017, 1112 HOURS Officers responded to location on an adult male who had slumped in his car. Officers detected a strong odor of marijuana and when asked if the male had any drugs in the car, he did produce drugs. Male complained of a medical condition and was transported to the hospital. A search of the vehicle revealed a large amount of drugs. The vehicle was seized. Case forwarded to DTF for charging. DOMESTIC — 5XX Miriam St 9/23/2017, 1716 HOURS Squads were dispatched to location on a verbal mother/daughter domestic. Officers advised that someone will need to leave for the night. The daughter went to her grandparents for the evening. WARRANT — 2XXX Dodd Rd 9/23/2017, 1846 HOURS Officer conducted a random query of license plate at Dodd Rd and Market St. The registered owner showed a warrant. A traffic stop was conducted and the driver was the registered owner. The driver was arrested and transported to Dakota County Jail. MISSING PERSON — 1XXX Delaware Ave 9/25/2017, 1440 HOURS Reporting party came to the police department to report his daughter missing. His daughter did not show up for any classes at school after second hour and has a history of mental health issues. A KOPS alert was issued. A few hours later, officers were notified that she was located and was going to be taken to the hospital for a mental health evaluation. PD ACCIDENT — Lexington Ave/Hwy 110 9/25/2017, 1729 HOURS Officers responded to the area of Hwy 110 and Lexington for a hit and run minor property damage accident. Suspect vehicle struck victims vehicle with low speed impact and then left the area. Information obtained did not match the described vehicle. Case inactive. THEFT — 7XX Mendota Heights Rd 9/25/2017, 1958 HOURS Several students had their personal belongings stolen out of a locker room at a local middle school. Private video captured the suspects in the act. Officers are following up with the school administration to obtain identities of the two suspects and subsequently charge them with theft. PD ACCIDENT — Lexington Ave/Vail Dr 9/25/2017, 2001 HOURS Officers responded to the intersection of Lexington Ave and Vail Dr to the report of a one vehicle crash. Upon arrival it was determined that the driver missed the turn and the vehicle became stuck in a ditch on a culvert. The driver submitted to field sobriety tests and it was determined impairment was not the cause of the crash. The vehicle was ultimately driven away from the scene. 3 TRESPASS — 1XXX Winston Ci 9/27/2017, 0754 HOURS Officers were called to location on a disturbance. Callers grandson was in the garage and had been previously trespassed. It was discovered suspect had multiple warrants. The male was arrested for the outstanding warrants and cited for trespassing. THEFT — 1XXX Delaware Ave 9/27/2017, 0950 HOURS Officer responded to location on a report of a recovered stolen item with a juvenile suspect detained. Suspect was ordered to return the stolen item and advised the case would be sent to the Dakota County Attorney for charging. THREATS/STALKING — 1XXX Commerce Dr 9/27/2017, 1037 HOURS Officers responded to a local business on a threat report made by an employee. Upon arrival, suspect was gone. Employer will be terminating the employee. FRAUD — 1XXX Northland Dr 9/27/2017, 1050 HOURS Officer was called to location on an after the fact financial transaction card fraud. RP stated subcontractor applied for and received a corporate credit card without permission and used it after she was fired. Officer was able to reach suspect via phone who stated she knew nothing about it. Case pending. PD ACCIDENT — Mendota Heights Rd/Monet Ln 9/27/2017, 1243 HOURS Officers responded to Mendota Heights Rd and Monet Ct on a one vehicle accident. Vehicle backed into a stop sign and light pole on private property. CREATE & PRACTICE A FIRE ESCAPE PLAN  Create a home fire escape plan with two ways out of every room.  Practice a home fire drill at least twice a year with your family.  Choose a place to meet outside that is a safe distance away from your home. IN AN EMERGENCY, LEAVE HOME IMMEDIATELY  Make sure your family leaves the home immedi- ately if there is a fire.  Choose the safest escape route. If there is a lot of smoke, get low and crawl out of the house as quickly as possible.  Call 911 after you are a safe distance away from your home.
