Why We Celebrate Labor Day
It is a creation of the labor movement and is dedicated to the social and economic
achievements of American workers. It constitutes a yearly national tribute to the
contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of
our country.
The first Labor Day holiday was celebrated on Tuesday, September 5, 1882, in New
York City. The second Labor Day holiday was celebrated just a year later, on
September 5, 1883. In 1884 the first Monday in September was selected as the
holiday.
The first Labor Day was observed by having a parade to exhibit to the public “the
strength and esprit de corps of the trade and labor organizations ” of the
community, followed by a festival for the recreation and amusement of the
workers and their families.
Celebrating Labor Day Nowadays
In the U.S., Labor Day is an official federal holiday. This means that all government
offices, schools and many businesses are closed on this day. In parts of the
country, people celebrate by parades, fireworks and barbeques. Labor Day is also
the unofficial “end of Summer.”
Let the nation pay tribute on Labor Day to the creator of so much of the nation ’s
strength, freedom, and leadership—The American Worker

HAVE A SAFE WEEK!
If you're driving behind a bus,
allow a greater following
distance than if you were
driving behind a car. It will
give you more time to stop
once the yellow lights start
flashing. It is illegal in all 50
states to pass a school bus
that is stopped to load or
unload children.
Never pass a bus from
behind – or from either
direction if you're on an
undivided road – if it is
stopped to load or
unload children.
If the yellow or red lights
are flashing and the stop
arm is extended, traffic
must stop.
The area 10 feet around
a school bus is the most
dangerous for children;
stop far enough back to
allow them space to
safely enter and exit the
bus.
Be alert; children often
are unpredictable, and
they tend to ignore
hazards and take risks.
