Memorial Day is a day of remembrance for U.S. soldiers who died in military service. It was first observed in 1868, when flowers were placed on graves of Union and Confederate soldiers at Arlington National Cemetery. It later changed from honoring the dead from the Civil War to honoring the dead from all American wars. Once known as “Decoration Day,” it was traditionally observed on May 30. Now it is on the last Monday in May to create the three-day weekend. On Memorial Day we honor the final resting places of the more than one million men and women who sacrificed their lives for our Nation, by decorating their graves with the stars and stripes, as generations have done since 1868. It is tradition to fly American flags at half-staff in memory, then have the living raise them at noon as a symbol of carrying on. Each year on Memorial Day a national moment of remembrance takes place at 3:00 p.m. local time. The sacrifice of those who died in service for our country should be remembered, and that remembrance should be more than just a family get-together or a day in the park. We should all take a moment to reflect upon those who died in service and explain what the day means to our children. In memory of many, in honor of all. Thank you. 2 FRAUD—2XXX SWAN DR 05/18/17, 0923 HOURS Complainant notified bank of unauthorized charges made on his credit card. Bank was able to reverse charges and was investigating the fraudulent activity. No suspect information available at the time of the report. Case inactive. PROPERTY DAMAGE—1XXX Sibley Memorial Hwy 05/19/17, 1324 HOURS Complainant reported vandalism to their vehicle while parked at work. Unknown suspect intentionally keyed the vehicle with language. Victim was unaware of any possible suspect; case inactive pending further suspect info or evidence. PLATE IMPOUNDMENT—9XX SIBLEY MEMORIAL HWY 05/19/17, 1955 HOURS While on patrol, officer ran a plate and found the RO was revoked and the plates were flagged for impoundment. Traffic stop was conducted and driver was the RO, who was also aware of the situation. The plates were seized and the vehicle was towed. Driver was cited and given a lift home. PROPERTY DAMAGE—9XX MENDOTA HEIGHTS RD 05/20/17, 0650 HOURS Passersby reported a vehicle in a parking lot with shattered windows. The vehicle had been left in the lot overnight. Suspect(s) thru a landscape stone repeatedly through windows. Vehicle was towed by owner. Suspect information pending. ASSIST PUBLIC—9XX SIBLEY MEMORIAL HWY 05/20/17, 1148 HOURS Officer received a call from reporting party who claimed they left their cell phone on the counter of a local business. After learning the details, officer responded to and viewed surveillance. The video showed the reporting party leaving the store with the phone in her hand. No theft; nothing further; case closed. THEFT FROM AUTO—9XX SIBLEY MEMORIAL HWY 05/20/17, 2201 HOURS Victim reported theft from her vehicle. Suspects broke the front passenger window and stole her purse. Her cards and debit cards were then used at multiple locations. Case under investigation. THEFT FROM AUTO—9XX SIBLEY MEMORIAL HWY 05/20/17, 2344 HOURS Officer were dispatched to theft from auto, involving an unsecured vehicle in a parking lot. Related to similar theft reported in same area. Case under investigation. FRAUD—1XXX SIBLEY MEMORIAL HWY 05/21/17, 2151 HOURS Officers responded to location on report of a suspicious person using a credit card without authorization. Suspect was still on scene upon arrival and was interviewed. Suspect was allowed to leave with her small children. Case forwarded to attorney for charging. HIT & RUN ACCIDENT—PILOT KNOB/HWY 13 05/22/17, 0737 HOURS Responded to a property damage, hit and run, crash at the intersection of Pilot Knob Road and Highway 13. Damage was minor, comp had little information regarding suspect vehicle. Not enough information to investigate further. Case is inactive. THEFT—9XX CHIPPEWA AVE 05/22/17, 0953 HOURS Made phone contact with comp in the 900 block of Chippewa Avenue on a theft report. Comp reported that sometime in the past week, someone stole three door mats from her back door step. There is no suspect information. This case is inactive. No narrative. 3 THEFT—2XXX CENTRE POINTE BLVD 05/22/17, 0800 HOURS Business reported theft of catalytic converter from vehicle parked in lot overnight. No suspect information; case inactive. THEFT—2XXX SIBLEY MEMORIAL HWY 05/22/17, 1817 HOURS A woman staying in Mendota Heights had her social security card, birth certificate and vehicle title stolen from her car by her ex-husband. The suspect confirmed the theft to the victim through a text message. Case under investigation. FIGHT—8XX SIBLEY MEMORIAL HWY 05/23/17, 2342 HOURS Officers were dispatched to a fight in progress in the 800 block of Sibley Memorial Highway. When officers arrived, the suspect was being detained by one of the establishment owners. Officers took the suspect into custody; suspect arrested for assault and transported to jail. Formal charges pending. THEFT IN PROGRESS—1XXX CLEMENT ST 05/24/17, 0600 HOURS Responded to 1400 block of Clement for suspicious activity in progress, reporting two people going through cars not belonging to them and possible theft of auto. Arrived in area and located both suspects with stolen property and tools in their possession. Taken into custody without incident and jailed. THEFT FROM AUTO—6XX 1ST AVE 05/24/17, 0657 HOURS Home owner in the 600 block of 1st Ave reports that his vehicle battery, fuses and relay switches were stolen. Officers were dispatched to the 1400 block of Clement St and arrested two suspects for theft. It was later determined that the suspects had stolen this victim ’s auto parts. Case Status: Cleared by arrest. ANIMAL BITE— MENDAKOTA PARK 05/24/17, 1329 HOURS Victim reports being bit by a dog at Mendakota Park. The incident took place while the victim was jogging at the park. The victim stated that the bite did not break the skin. At the time of the report the owner of the dog was not known. VEHICLE IMPOUND—DODD RD/SUNSET LN 05/24/17, 2100 HOURS Routine patrol found illegally parked vehicle obstructing the northbound lane of travel on Dodd Rd at Sunset Lane. The registered owner could not be found. Vehicle was in the lane of travel and parked in a poorly lit area. Vehicle cited and towed. CRISIS—1XXX VICTORIA CURVE 05/25/17, 0024 HOURS Officers responded to the 11XX block of Victoria Curve for a mental health crisis. The patient sent videos to an ex-girlfriend that showed the consumption of numerous pills. The subject was ultimately located and transported to the hospital. FRAUD—1XXX VICTORIA CT 05/25/17, 1324 HOURS Reporting who resides on the 1000 block of Victoria had fraudulent activity on her account. The financial institution reimbursed any monetary loss. No suspects. CAR VS MOTORCYCLE— 1XXX LILYDALE RD 05/25/17, 1814 HOURS Officers responded to Lilydale Rd for a single motorcycle accident. The driver and motorcycle ended up in the creek area under the railroad tracks. The driver was able climb out of the creek and was transported by ambulance. Mail theft is a continual and consistent problem in our city as well as many surrounding areas. Here are a few tips to help keep you from being a victim.  Pick up your mail every day. If you are going out of town, arrange for your mail to be held or have someone pick it up for you.  NEVER place outgoing mail in the mailbox with the flag up. This is just an invitation for thieves.  Watch package delivery dates and times, or have packages delivered to a place where someone can receive them.  Identity thieves also target mail thrown in the trash. Make sure to appropriately destroy unwanted mail containing personal information.  Watch out for each other. If you see someone tampering with a mailbox or stealing mail, immediately call 911!
