This award recognizes the selected individual who has been an outstanding volunteer in the Mendota Heights community and demonstrates the spirit of the contributions of long-time Police Reservist and consummate volunteer, Jerry Murphy. MHPD would like to extend a big CONGRATULATIONS to the first winner of this award, Ted Kronschnabel. Ted was nominated by our own Officer Jennifer Fordham, for his enthusiastic and resilient positive attitude and for the positive team spirit he conveys to the youth and parents in our city. Ted works tirelessly with MHAA Soccer, Baseball and with the Sibley Area Hockey Association. He is a regular volunteer in our local schools and has been active in the ISD197 PTA program, most recently as a co-PTA President for Mendota Elementary. Thank you, Ted, for your contributions to this community and to your family. You should be proud of the selfless service you provide that has made a difference to so many. Garold “Jerry” Murphy Community Service Award Sexual assault can happen to anyone, it does not discriminate by race, ethnicity, religion, gender, age, marital status or sexual orientation. 80% of sexual assaults are committed by someone the victim knows and are typically accompanied with the use of alcohol or drugs (Department of Community Medicine, Wayne State University). Sexual assault can take many forms from cat calling and demeaning remarks to rape. 17% of men and 25% of women (Rid of My Disgrace, Justin and Lindsey Holcomb) are or will be the victims of sexual assault in their lifetime. Victims of these types of attacks may be very unwilling to come forward with the information that they possess because they may be scared to be re-victimized by having to retell their experiences again and again, in fact only 6% of sexual assaults are reported to the police (American Association of University Women). The largest fear for victims of sexual abuse and assault is the fear that no one will believe them. If someone comes to you stating that they have been sexually abused or assaulted the first thing you need to do is take them seriously, no matter how they have acted in the past. If they have the courage to confide in you that they have been sexually assaulted or abused you must first reassure them that they are not alone and you are here for them and what ever happened was not their fault.
