Res 70 - 371 Requesting Representation on the Metropolitan Airports CommissionRESOLUTION NO. 371
RESOLUTION REQUESTING REPRESENTATION ON THE
METROPOLITAN AIRPORTS COMMISSION
WHEREAS, virtually two-thirds of the Twin Cities metropolitan
population has no representation on the Metropolitan Airports
Commission, which is in violation of the "One Man, One Vote"
principle established by the Federal Supreme Court, and
WHEREAS, the suburban communities are most directly affected
by the Metropolitan Airports Commission's decisions, and
WHEREAS, testimony given at the M.A.C. meetings points out
conclusively that a decision for a commercial airport, be it north
or south, is only the first step in an overall airport facility
expansion program, and
WHEREAS, according to this same testimony general aviation
traffic will increase ten -fold by the year 2000, and
WHEREAS, anywhere from six to a dozen additional general
aviation airports must be built in the Twin Cities suburban areas
to accommodate this great expansion of general aviation traffic, and
WHEREAS, decisions on neither a commercial site nor the many
general aviation sites should be made until suburban areas are
properly represented on the Metropolitan Airports Commission,
THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that twenty-eight mayors of the
Greater Twin Cities Metropolitan Area go on record as asking the
1971 State Legislature to reconstitute the Metropolitan Airports
Commission so as to provide appropriate suburban representation.
