PARKS AND RECREATION MEETING
August 8, 2016
The August meeting of the Mendota Heights Parks and Recreation Commission was held on Monday, August 8, 2016 at Mendota Heights City Hall, 1101 Victoria Curve.
Chair Paper called to order the parks and recreation commission meeting at 6:30 p.m. The following commissioners were present: Chair Paper, Commissioners: Jay Miller, David Miller and
Michael Toth. Staff present: Recreation Programmer Sloan Wallgren.
Approval of Agenda
Chair Paper added a discussion of a memorial for Officer Patrick to the agenda.
COMMISSIONER JAY MILLER MADE A MOTION TO APPROVE THE AGENDA; COMMISSIONER DAVID MILLER SECONDED THE MOTION.

Approval of Minutes from August 8, 2016
COMMISSIONER JAY MILLER MADE A MOTION TO APPROVE THE MINUTES FROM THE JULY 12, 2016 PARKS AND RECREATION COMMISSION MEETING; COMMISSIONER TOTH SECONDED THE MOTION.

Announcements
Mr. Wallgren announced that MHAA is still accepting registrations for fall soccer. Currently, MHAA has over 700 kids registered to participate this fall.
Eagle Scout Project
Mr. Wallgren introduced AJ Stringer to the commission. AJ installed a native rain garden at the Par 3 in July as part of his Eagle Scout Project. AJ informed the commission what he
did and provided some before and after picture of his project.
Mendota Heights Athletic Association
The Executive Director of the Mendota Heights Athletic Association, John Masica, presented to the commission how their summer sports programs went this year. Registration numbers for
baseball and softball were consistent with years past and lacrosse numbers fell a bit. Mr. Masica stated that football and soccer are starting soon and they have seen the numbers in
each sport improving. Mr. Wallgren stated that the city and MHAA have had a great working relationship the past few years, and he is excited to continue working them to improve the
programs in our community. Mr. Wallgren thanked Mr. Masica for all that he does for the community.
Dodd Road Study Update
Mr. Wallgren updated the commission on the Dodd Road Trail Study. The next step of the project is to hold two public engagement workshops at the two CDA buildings in town. The reason
for engaging residents that live in these buildings is because the SHIP Grant is focused on providing healthy transportation options to underserved populations such as seniors and children.
Review of the July Meeting
During the July meeting the commissioners had many questions that staff had to find answers to. Staff provide the commission with answers to all of their questions. The commission
reviewed the questions and answers prior to the meeting.
Office Patrick Memorial
Chair Paper wanted to keep the discussion moving forward about creating a memorial for Officer Patrick in town, part of this could also include renaming a park in Officer Patrick’s name.
Mr. Wallgren will looking what is needed to do this and follow up with the commission.
Par 3 Report
Mr. Wallgren informed the commission that things at the Par 3 continue to be busy. He stated that the junior golf lessons and leagues continue to be very popular with families. The
course is still in good shape and staff will begin to do some fall maintenance to the golf course very soon.
Commission Comments
Commissioner Jay Miller thanked the people that serve us and would like to see something for Officer moved forward to honor him.
Commissioner David Miller said it was a good meeting and interesting to get caught up.
Commissioner Toth thanked the people that serve and protect us, and said that it is important to thank them and remember them.
Chair Paper recognized a resident that was participating in the Olympic Games. He also encouraged everyone to vote tomorrow and thanked AJ Stringer for his project in our community
