Announcements
Mr. Wallgren announced that MHAA is still accepting registrations for fall soccer. Currently,
MHAA has over 700 kids registered to participate this fall.
Eagle Scout Project
Mr. Wallgren introduced AJ Stringer to the commission. AJ installed a native rain garden at the
Par 3 in July as part of his Eagle Scout Project. AJ informed the commission what he did and
provided some before and after picture of his project.
Mendota Heights Athletic Association
The Executive Director of the Mendota Heights Athletic Association, John Masica, presented
to the commission how their summer sports programs went this year. Registration numbers for
baseball and softball were consistent with years past and lacrosse numbers fell a bit. Mr.
Masica stated that football and soccer are starting soon and they have seen the numbers in each
sport improving. Mr. Wallgren stated that the city and MHAA have had a great working
relationship the past few years, and he is excited to continue working them to improve the
programs in our community. Mr. Wallgren thanked Mr. Masica for all that he does for the
community.
Dodd Road Study Update
Mr. Wallgren updated the commission on the Dodd Road Trail Study. The next step of the
MH Parks and Recreation Commission 8-8-2016 Page 2
project is to hold two public engagement workshops at the two CDA buildings in town. The
reason for engaging residents that live in these buildings is because the SHIP Grant is focused
on providing healthy transportation options to underserved populations such as seniors and
children.
Review of the July Meeting
During the July meeting the commissioners had many questions that staff had to find answers
to. Staff provide the commission with answers to all of their questions. The commission
reviewed the questions and answers prior to the meeting.
Office Patrick Memorial
Chair Paper wanted to keep the discussion moving forward about creating a memorial for Officer
Patrick in town, part of this could also include renaming a park in Officer Patrick’s name. Mr.
Wallgren will looking what is needed to do this and follow up with the commission.

SUBJECT: Dodd Road Study Update
Update
The city was required to host several community engagement sessions as part of receiving grant
money from the Statewide Health Initiative Program. Staff held open houses at Parkview Plaza
on August 25th and at the Village Commons on August 31st. Each open house was attended by
about a dozen residents from each building. Staff was able to collect great feedback about the
possibilities of having a trail along Dodd Road. The general consensus of those in attendance was
that even though they would not use the trail because of limited mobility, they felt that it was very
important for children and families to have a safe route to travel on along Dodd Road.
In the month of September staff will be working with area schools to conduct surveys. Staff
plans to survey students at Henry Sibley High School, Friendly Hills Middle School, Somerset
Elementary, Visitation School and St. Thomas.
Finally, our consultants will hold an open house on October 17th from 5:30pn to 6:30pm to
answer any questions or concerns residents may have. Following the open house the consultants
will make a formal presentation with their findings and recommendations.

SUBJECT: Warming House Hours
Background
There has been a request to possibly expand the hours at the warming houses for the upcoming season.
Below are the current hours of the warming houses:
Monday-Friday 4:00pm-8:00pm
Saturday 9:00am-8:00pm
Sunday 12:00pm-6:00pm
Non School Days & Holidays 12:00pm-8:00pm
The ice rinks and warming house are open roughly 10 weeks each year. Each of the three warming
houses are staffed roughly 40 hours per week during the season.
Budget Impact
The ice rinks and warming house are open roughly 10 weeks each year. Each of the three warming
houses are staffed roughly 40 hours per week during the season. Rink attendants will make minimum
wage this season, which is $9.50 per hour. Depending on the season staffing all three of the warming
houses costs a total of about $8,000-$11,000. Increasing or decreasing hours will be at the rate of
$28.50 per hour, due to the city operating three warming houses.
Required Action
If the commission wishes for the city council to consider changing the hours of operation of the
warming house, please make a motion to do so. A simple majority will move this item forward.

Update
All or our junior golf programs are done for the season. We still have one adult league that is still
playing on Thursday nights. There are several group outings scheduled at the golf course during
the month of September.
Maintenance
The golf course remains in excellent shape. Staff will be painting the outside of the clubhouse in
early September. The golf course will be closed on Tuesday September 13th while staff performs
annual maintenance to the greens and tee boxes.
Budget
Sales for the month of August were down slightly due to a few rain days and a couple very hot and
humid days. More detailed financial information will be provided on Tuesday.
